Nice AOD APP - Moto G Power Themes, Apps, and Mods

This is my post in the Moto G Stylus forum
Disclaimer: I have no idea who makes this app and I get nothing for promoting it. I just think it is a nice addition to this phone.
Found what I consider a nice app for this phone. In the play store: Always on AMOLED.
I like the MOTO built in screen saver, but it only works plugged in and it doesn't show notifications. I was missing calls and messages. You have to touch the screen to bring up the home screen and see if there are any missed calls, etc.
This app has a lot of customization and works whether charging or not. I have my phone in a dock at my desk, so I can see the time and any new notifications at a glance. If it is not in the dock I can leave it face up and see the time, etc. or place it face down and the display turns off. If in your pocket or in a holster or other case that covers the screen the display turns off saving battery. I've gone almost a whole day without losing any charge because it was face down on my desk while I was out.
Pro's:
Nice customization choices
Home or lock screen don't come on when plugging in or unplugging
Can put date, time, battery level and weather on it if you choose
Notifications show and an optional pulsating blue border for a new notification
You can adjust the brightness of the display, but it doesn't automatically shift given lighting conditions (partly a con)
The display shifts around so as not to cause burn in
Con's:
If not plugged in and screen not covered, it will drain the battery faster
Pushing the power button does not bring up the home screen - you have to double tap the screen
There may be better options, let us know - I'm always looking for better options.
Cheers!

[Q] Anyone have NoLED working on Nook?

I installed NoLed on my nook to get visible notifications when receiving email but it doesn't seem to work. Just wondered if anyone had it working and if there was a trick to getting it working?
Thanks!
Isn't that app made for (AM)OLED displays that don't need power to display a black screen?
Using this on an LCD screen would be completely pointless as having the homescreen visible could actually consume less power than a black screen with a tiny color dot
Nope. Used for notifications for those of us who do not have pretty lights. Looks like a cool app for NC peeps.
We are talking about this app here, right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730692&highlight=lcd
I know what it is used for, I just think it's pointless in terms of power consumption. As I said AMOLED screens require no power to display black. So only the pixels used to display the "notification led" consume power.
Doing the same on an LCD screen would require the backlight to be on all the time AND having the screen 99% black. You can not waste more power with an LCD display. That's why I said a visible homescreen could actually be more battery-friendly than this app. But please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just writing down what I gathered about different display types
Looks like you're both right--it was made to take the place of a dedicated LED indicator on a phone that had none but did have an OLED screen. It probably works on LCD, but, as pointed out, consumes lots of power as it wasn't intended for that display type.
To make it work, your LCD and backlight would have to be set not to turn off, it seems (not sure--maybe it can wake it, but I see no mention of using it with an LCD on the linked page or the FAQ).
Bad........

NoLed app

Very useful and works on 4X perfectly. Different kind of customization to suit your lifestyle, e.g. icon, color of led, time to turn on/off led. It saves you trouble to press the Power button to check whether there is email, SMS, missed call,..............in. case you miss the sound notifications.
What does it light up? There is no notification LED on the 4X?
Ah, now I get it, it displays a notification on the screen. How much battery does it take in comparison to the screen being off all the time?

I tried it once on my o2x, but it drained the battery, so I uninstalled it after a short while. But it was a year ago or so, it could have been optimized since
Sent from my LG-P880 using xda app-developers app
Won't let my phone deep sleep >_<
Can set the time to stop and restart, there are also other features to save battery - notification timeout, dismiss with proximity sensor (dismiss notifications when phone is in pocket or upside down), etc. I use the app for two days now and didn't notice significant battery drainage.
Recommend to give it a try.

Is there a modification that I can unlock the phone with active display?

So for example, normally, you have active display turn on automatically showing you just the notifications (still need to slide to unlock/wake screen) by vibration (assuming also light is detected ie not in pocket).
Is there a mod that I can add or an option where I can have this 'on vibration' open the screen immediately and not just on active display?
So something like what it's doing now by skipping the active display screen directly and just waking the screen and go straight to the phone.
And of course I have no password on my lockscreen
Does that kinda make sense? Is there something like this out there or a setting somewhere?
I have rooted, unlocked bootloader XT1053 with xposed and gravity box.
Sounds like a dead battery waiting to happen to me. If I bump my desk wrong at work and my phone isn't face down, active display lights up. It can do this several times in the period of 10 minutes, in essence leaving the screen on permanently.

There is nothing like this currently available....and IMO, that is a terrible idea. The whole point of AD is to provide notifications while just barely sipping battery power. Assuming such a modification was made consider this one of MANY scenarios:
You have your phone in your car, it 'sees light', it feels vibrations and so it turns on the screen. Now, not only are you using full battery power to light the display, but unless you reach over and click it back of with the power button, it is going to stay on for whatever length of time you have the display timeout set to.
Just imagine how quickly this could kill your battery....

well for those reasons I understand and would expect some toggle feature for when you want this and when you don't

Could you elaborate on which situations you would like the screen to turn on like that based on notifications instead or active display?

Set your screen timeout to 30 minutes and use the power button to turn it off. Then also turn off the lock screen. About as good as you're going to get, and short of coding the modification yourself, probably the best you'll get too.
I said in another thread recently.... Active Display is what it is. There's no way to modify it in anyway.

How do you get notifications?

For years I used my led for notifications. Even knew what kind of notification had based on the color of the led and with no need of an annoying sound.
Now I'm lost. Always on display for me it's a waste of battery. The edge lighting is not working properly (look for the thread about it) and anyway it only lights once, I would like to see it 10 minutes after. The light around the camera is useless, as Samsung didn't implement it.
I'm using always on edge, but it's not working properly with autoinput (an app I use so I don't have to slide to unlock every single time). Every notification I get the screen turns on, so now I'm using only when screen is on.
What do you do for notifications?
I started with a Garmin Fenix 3 HR a few years ago. Then to a Pebble 2 HR. Now, a Fenix 5S Plus. Added bonus: Smart Lock when the watch is connected (whenever I'm not in bed or the shower) negates the need to use the FPR.
I had an OG Pixel XL where to notification shows up for a bit with the first sentence of the notification. It does on a black screen too so great for battery, basically an Always on display that is activated by notifications. So easy to glance at my phone when getting a notification and decide whether to answer or ignore.
Now I'm lost too, there's no built in way to have the screen turn on when you get a notification so I'm using a third party app but it actually just shows the lockscreen not a black screen with the notification in the middle so it's jarring as hell.

Not working yet? Smart Stay-like “Screen Attention”

This setting doesn't seem to be working for me, and this is one of the biggest features I want enabled. I would think could be a massive battery saver, but also extremely convenient. Reading a long article online, sometimes I'm just staring at the screen, not moving touching the display, and makes so much sense for a Face ID thing to see your eyes focus on the phone to keep it awake. But then I would guess can save battery, as when your done viewing the phone, and put it down, the screen turns off.
Android Q adds support for a Smart Stay-like “Screen Attention” feature
https://www.xda-developers.com/android-q-smart-stay-screen-attention/
Settings > Display > Screen attention
I enabled this in the settings, then I set my screen time out to 15 seconds, to save battery, but thought this "screen attention" thing will keep the screen on for me, when reading news and stuff , as the face ID thing will scan my eyes keeping the display on. Well it doesn't seem to work, if I just stare at a web page for longer than 15 seconds, the screens turns off.
Huh, wonder if the dwell time is just too short. Samsung's version didn't work well for me with less than 30 seconds.
Works for me. It does say that it uses the front facing camera so maybe it doesn't work in poor lighting.
Screen Attention doesn't seem to work for me? I have my display set to 30 seconds to shut off, but if I read an article on my web browser for 30+ seconds, the screen fades to black and turns off.
I have Motion Sense on, but not everything enabled, but I do have Lift Wake, and Reach to wake, and Tap to wake enabled.
Unless there's some other setting I am missing specifically for Screen Attention to work?
Screen Attention has so far been hit-and-miss for me. It appears to be working most of the time, but I have also had it on when the screen just dims and shuts off as I am reading. No poor lighting issues here. This was observed in daylight.
Works for me without issues... How do you hold your phone. Maybe you need to have a thumb in front of the screen so that soli can see something there?
The feature uses the camera. Mine has worked fine but I'm on 1 minute.
Mine never seem to work besides the first day. It's just easier to set the lock to 1 minute and don't bother with screen attention.
