Help w/ build.prop! Android 12, Magisk, Rooted - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

I just reset, flashed, and rooted my P5, and installed Magisk. I have Grandfathered Unlimited data on VZW and have been using Hotspot for home internet for years now. Well, I can't for the life of me remember how to edit the build.prop to set net.tether.noprovisioning to True. I downloaded a build.prop editing app and it fails - I also downloaded termux and vaguely recall using command lines somewhere to add the noprovisioning line to the .prop file. PLease someone help me and break it down barney style!
Additional info: I installed magiskhide Props Config, accessed it through termux and added the net.tether.noprovisioning = true but hotspot still wont stay on.
Also went into terminal and added "settings put global tether_dun_required 0" but nothing happened and I still can not use hotspot

Why is that even blocked? Do y'all have to pay extra for something that came with the phone?? Up in Canada I just turn on hotspot and connect a device

Galaxy Note 3 Rooted- Straight Talk Tethering Stuck At "Verifying"

Straight Talk Tethering, rooted phone
Just trying to use my rooted ST note 3 for a hotspot for my little tab4 tablet. Ran the file programs but only have 2 lines with tethering info and both are set to '0'. Neither one is the providers check gateway? Line. Just a tethering provision line and a tethering automation line. When I turn on my hotspot it just runs 'verifying' and never goes anywhere. Even tried to turn it on and check files while its accessing but still only two lines at '0' show. Thanks for reading this.

I use X Tether http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.dym.motoxtether for my note 3 and it works for me (with X Tether you need Xposed Installer http://repo.xposed.info/module/de.robv.android.xposed.installer . I have used this on different devices and it has worked too, [HOW TO] Tether Blocking Fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/how-to-tether-blocking-fix-t2544487
x tether and xposed ??
Thanks for the reply. Really dont know enough to install these programs. Dont want to ruin cell. I rooted with towelroot. Trying to just make file changes or additions to get my hotspot working with st. Thanks.

On KitKat you must have exposed to tether(plus other programs). Google caved in to the big providers and the incentive seems to be money. If you are on JB Foxfi should work from the play store.

Wireless Tether

I looked around and did not see this. Now that the phone is opened up, if there an easy way to just enable the wireless tether?
I've had WiFi tethering since I bought the phone right after it came out, I'm not sure why others don't have the option. I found it in Settings -> More -> Tethering & Mobile Hotspot. I've had this on KK 4.4.4 as well as LP 5.1. Is it because it's only available with non grandfathered unlimited data devices (I think they got rid of that recently too)?
Unlimited can tether the same way, but we have to pay $20 a month. Xposed module xtether seems to work. It let me turn tether on without the message that I need to upgrade. Did not connect and test it yet.

Just flash CF's 1.1A ROM..it has wireless tether enabled where you can turn on in the stock app. No need for a separate xposed app.

Heh, ok. I've got their UNLIMITED TALK & TEXT 2GB plan 75$ and it incudes hotspot/tethering.
Anyone care to share what to edit to get WiFi tethering? Flashing a different ROM is not really what I wanna do right now, would like to just do it on my newly unlocked stock rom Turbo

I'm interested in the WiFi tether as well.
Install xposed, look for xtether, I've used it all day and 0 issues.
Alternatively, I think you can add the following line to /system/build.prop:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

+1 for xTether. It works great for me. I used it all day to play on my tablet while the wife was Black Friday shopping.

I did this and am having no luck
So I need a little help please. I have my phone unlocked, rooted, twrp installed, made a backup, and now SU updated from reading on here. I have a UDP and want my wifi tether to work without installing custom roms. I'm happy at this point with what stock does. I'm not the greatest with this, but I am not afraid to read. So to my problem. I'm stuck with the xpose thing. I just don't see or get what needs to be done to install it. I read I need to flash something first? But i'm not sure why. I looked a little at just adding the line in the build file but was not sure if that would still work or if that was old news. Please someone point in the right direction.
Thanks.

Use a file manager with root capabilities such as solid explorer, amaze file manager or whatever to edit the build.prop file. It's in /system/. Add 'net.tethering.noprovisioning=true' without quotes and reboot. Tethering within the settings app should now work.
Thanks for the reply. I added it at the end of the file. Rebooted and turned the tether on. no messages. I think I'm good to go. Again Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the tip on the build prop edit. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a bit now. Just to confirm, this method will work on the latest version of 5.1 so long as I'm rooted and unlocked, correct?
It has worked great for me. I do not load in ROM'S or make a lot of other changes to my phone. Paying the 25.00 is just math for me. I was giving 30.00 a month to Verizon to pay for tethering. Now I don't. So in 1 month I come out ahead. You need your boot loader unlocked, and will need to pay for that 1 time.
Will this tether-unlock be "visible" to VZ and cause me issues under my unlimited plan? (I presume by smooth's reply that he hasn't had this problem, but I want to be sure)

[REQUEST] Wifi Tether and/or USB Tether

Please create a Wifi or USB Tether module for Magisk. The Magisk Tether Enabler module is no longer available. The good Wifi and USB Tether apps for rooted phones do not work with Magisk, only SuperSU. ie Wifi Tether by Fabio. Grasso. Please, I do not want to go backwards and root with SuperSU
Why can't the native tether app be used? It should work just by having net.tethering.noprovisioning=true in build.prop and entering:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
In adb or terminal. From what I've been seeing in custom ROMs at least for my Nexus 6, nobody is using tether_dun_required 0 in their builds, having to do it manually every wipe.
I never tried the module you speak of but I wouldn't be too surprised if that's why it did lol.

I do not pay extra for tethering and have unlimited phone data plan. The wifi tether app I mentioned gets around the carrier detecting tethering data and blocking it. Wifi Tether worked great fo 5 years on 2 different rooted phones using SuperSU. The developer admits issues with Magisk and Kingroot. No issues with SuperSU.
A Magisk module would would be appreciated and Im certain others would use it.

Hi Android jack,
I only use the USB tether, I should have been clearer with my reply.

Why don't you just try the build.prop and terminal commands I posted then try the native tether I'm sure you will find it works then...

You will have to tell me exactly how to set that up. build.prop, terinal cammands, means nothing to me. If you mean turning on tether in settings, it gets blocked by the carrier.
Installing magisk modules and app that require root is better for average users anyway. And I thought magisk modules was one big advantage of magisk...
I am Also Interested in Terminal commands on what i have to do thanks.

Let us know if it works, your phone model and OS.
I am not going to know if it works now mate.
I just contacted Three in the UK
I asked them about my hotspot data as i could no longer see it on their website.
They said you are on AYCE Data i was like ok ???
they said your hotspot and AYCE is combined now and i was like huh?
the person on the other end said you have unlimited Tethering.
I was like OMG gobsmacked as i was i left them a great survey.
So i didnt need this after all but if i do get any phones - i will try this method and i will report back on to this thread. (but highly likely i wont be back for awhile)
I am using a Samsung s8
Did Magisk ever made it on they app that you can install they hotspot. I have a pixel 3. If anybody try it out of it please let me know. The carrier is throttling download speeds by margin. It won't go no more then 650kbps download. But when it's the beginning of the billing cycle I can get 23mbps down. After using 15GB of hotspot it drastically throttles it. Any bypass for this would greatly be appreciated

Have you looked through the thread you're posting in? There's a link just a few posts up with commands used for enabling tethering. The prop you can set with MagiskHide Props Config and the "settings put" command you should only have to enter in terminal once (if I remember correctly).

Android 9 update broke ability to Wifi Tether without root!

What a bummer! I used to use settings database editor to enable wifi tether. Worked fine. Android 9 broke this, now it says "a network issue may be preventing..." It does still turn on and my devices can connect to it, but no internet
This is so disheartening! Any solutions?

no. But if I can root this thing and that allows me to enable thethering, then I will go that route.
Otherwise, I might just downgrade to 8.1. 9.0 doesnt seem to be any different anyway. And I need tethering... Like right now, I am trying to verify my VNC works from outside my LAN... I used to just connect my phone to my laptop and bam, I can prove it works from a different IP.
Freaking frustrating. Every version of android tries to lock down Wifi Tether. I paid for my 5GB allotment, why the hell do they care how I use it?

Wait what carrier are you with? And simple to make more money you have your normal internet on your plan And then you have the 1-100GB for tethering that you can add on to your plan for a certain amount of money, me being in sprint on the highest plan I get 10GB for hotspot/tethering.

I'm on cricket. Why would I pay extra to use the same 5GB that i never use up every month? It's stupid. You're right, it's a scam. That's why I want to hack the tether for free. I have always found a way to do it in the past... and it worked on this phone with android 8....

There is a Magisk Module that supposedly works but you would have to personally check.
I upgraded my LM-V405QA to Pie and can native tether just fine. Since it is the unlocked version it does not perform any entitlement check.
It sounds like perhaps whatever you did to enable tethering on Android 8 no longer works the same way on 9, and that is why you get that message.
The module that @Ainz_Ooal_Gown mentioned does not appear in Magisk for me, however "MagiskHide Props Config" does. Using that you can set net.tethering.noprovisioning=true and reboot to bypass entitlement check.

Help with unlimited hot spot

I have rooted pixel 3a and would like to change buildprop to give me unlimited hot spot. I understand Google has blocked ediing of the build prop. I briefly read this can be accomplished with magisk but haven't found a guide to show the steps.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I'm not 100% sure this will work for ya, but it's the method I've used in the past on, both, this device (pixel 3a) and other Android 10 (moto g6, g7) devices. I haven't tried it on Android 11.
You'll need to:
-Download the magisk module called MagiskHide Props Config.
-Install it and reboot.
-Download a terminal app.
-type props.
-follow instructions.
Under the MagiskHide Props Config module you'll see some very detailed instructions and guide on using it.
Good luck!
-----------------------------
If that doesn't work.. there's several nice apps to bypass the hotspot limitations.
If you're looking to use a laptop with your hotspot, I highly suggest pdaNet. That's what I use, and it's absolutely incredible. For some strange reason, and I haven't figured it out yet -- probably related to throttling of certain types of data/downloads.. but when I use pdanet, my computer will actually download faster than the phone itself will.
If I run a speedtest on the phone, I will get 20-25mbps on average. But using the pdanet tether, I get 40ish. I can't really explain why.
[I actually have unlimited hotspot with my provider. I use Visible - by Verizon. It's $40/month (you can also sign up with and 1, 2,or 3 friends, and the price drops to $35, 30, and $25 respectively. No contracts and each bill comes completely separately.) And there's zero taxes or fees are added to the bill! It has unlimited data and unlimited hotspot! The only issue is that the hotspot speed is throttled at 5mbps. So using pdanet, allows me to get not only a faster speed, it also allows me to get the maximum speed. Like I said, the phone itself throttles at 20-25. But the laptop will pull up to 40-50 using the phone as a hotspot.]
