Hi All, I have just received my Pixel 7 and am really disappointed with how dull and washed out the display looks. When comparing it to my current OnePlus 8t's display it is lacking a lot of vibrancy and color accuracy. It has a slight green tint that makes viewing photo's a very sub-par experience.
Is anybody else having the same experience? also, is there a way to change the color profile manually?
I agree that the color on the Pixel 7 is a bit off. The "Natural" color profile is extremely dull and I feel like the "Adaptive" color profile is just weird. Sometimes I feel like it has a green or yellow hue and the blues and whites aren't popping enough...
I'm coming from a Oneplus 6T and have been using the "Display P3" or "AMOLED Wide Gamut" profiles for as long as I can remember but I wanted to see if the 6T's "Natural" profile looked similar to the Pixel 7's "Natural" profile for comparison and after putting them side-by-side, it seems to me that they are near identical.
Now I'm no expert but I feel like this means that the Pixel 7's "Adaptive" profile could be improved or that they could simply add in more profiles in the future. But one thing is for sure, I really don't like the default profiles on the Pixel 7 and I'd like if they tweaked them asap.
it jsut take your eyes a few days to adapt to it, I thought Natural looks fine...
That's the problem, I can't get used to it as it looks that bad.

Okay, so, I'm now on my 3rd N7 (2nd replacement), and I guess I'll keep it. Some screen separation and a bit of a yellow tint, but overall not bad. Interesting, though, that each unit has had a different color profile/temp. The first one was very nice, I'd say it was just the right temp with fairly true whites to my eyes. The second one had a terrible yellow cast to it. This third one is somewhere in between. So, just like with the Transformer Prime, I'm finding that whatever screen vendor ASUS is using once again has way too much screen variation for my tastes.
Interestingly, I did a little test and each of my main mobile devices have very different color temp (or profiles or whatever). My iPad 3 is very warm, with whites that are almost reddish. I tend to prefer this. My Epic 4G Touch has a very cold screen, with whites that are very blueish. I hate this. The Nexus 7 is in between.
What I find most interesting is that I really only notice each screen's variation when I go from one after using it for awhile right to another. If I go from the iPad 3 to the Nexus 7, whites on the Nexus 7 looks a little yellowish/greenish. If I go from the Nexus 7 to the iPad 3, then whites on the iPad 3 look way too red. If I go from the Nexus 7 to the E4GT, then whites on the E4GT look very blue, and if I go in the other direction then whites on the Nexus 7 actually look really good (I'd say, just about right).
Just goes to show you how our eyes can adjust to color temp variation, pretty much wanting to see whites, and why many people probably don't even notice their N7's having a yellow tint unless they happen to hold it next to another device (like, a N7 that doesn't have it).

It's called colour constancy - we automatically adjust the perceived colour to take into account differing illumination conditions. The quality of natural illumination varies dramatically depending on time of day, how much cloud there is, whether you're in direct sunlight or shade, so there was an evolutionary advantage in being able to adjust.

I'm still waiting for my first replacement.
I often see color uniformity issues on amoled panels especially on whites or in greys. For those who have a keen eye and know how to check, how is your screen uniformity? Post some pics on what image you tested it with.
I've had 2, I'm a printer( so see everything?) and have noticed the screen to have the top edge red and bottom green, sent one back but the new one had the same thing. Any one else notice it? Or maybe I should get some 3D GLASSES ?
Its a very common quality control issue on AMOLEDs even on the latest Note 7 it is still an issue, Aside from the Galaxy S1, I have yet to see a uniform AMOLED panel especially in whites and greys.
If you're colorblind, please disregard this thread. Rate this thread to express how you deem the color saturation and accuracy of the Google Pixel 2's display. A higher rating indicates that you think that color accuracy is very high and saturation is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Some brief observations about Pixel 2's display (in Natural and Boosted color modes):
+ Max brightness is pretty bright, and should provide adequate visibility in most conditions.
+ Nice, deep, inky, and uniform black, just as you'd expect from an OLED.
- Pure green (#00FF00) renders considerably lighter and paler than reference. Using my eyes alone, I can't tell how much of this is due to undersaturation vs color inaccuracy. The result is that elements that are mostly green (e.g. Google Hangouts icon, plant life in photos) sometimes look noticeably less vibrant in comparison to other elements on the screen.
- Red is undersaturated relative to the other colors. This is evidenced by the green tint that is clearly visible when viewing yellow and orange colors. Deep reds skew slightly purple as well.
- The display's color temperature appears cool in all but the brightest of indoor viewing conditions. I'm sure it looks neutral (i.e. great) under the blaring fluorescent lights of an electronics store, but isn't as well suited for home or office viewing. Some people prefer cooler colors. I'm of the mind that neutral or very slightly warm color temperature displays are much easier on the eyes and more visually appealing.
Most 2017 OLED smartphone displays I've seen have the problems I've listed, albeit to varying degrees. I'd chalk it up to the difficulties inherent to OLED screens, but past experience suggests otherwise: I've owned OLED phones with better color accuracy all the way back to 2013. It seems like things really got worse this year. Not sure if its the displays themselves or the color profiles being applied.
Using the new Saturated color mode swings the color temperature to a more neutral position, but the resulting appearance is way too saturated in general for my liking, and it doesn't completely resolve the issue of inaccurate reds.
I'm disappointed, as the display's color issues cause it to fall short of what I expect to find on a phone in Pixel 2's price range. I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to keep it.
Yellow!
Receive mine today, and the colour calibration was way off... I thought it a little yellow at first, and perhaps the beach on the default wallpaper might be influencing my judgement. Installed a few aps, played around with the settings, and then compared it with my previous phone and oh dear - it was clearly very yellow. Greys in particular looked awful, and whites like aged paper rather than white. So disappointing.
I also compared the colours with my aging Nexus 7, and that looked much better too, as do my various monitors. I've RMA'd the device, and will give one more a go before deciding whether to keep it. Such a shame - one of the main reasons I went for a 2 rather than a 2 XL was the supposedly better display... And if only Google would allow us to calibrate the colours ourselves, I could probably have resolved the issue myself.
Color calibration is indeed terrible.
Comparing it to me previous phone, google pixel XL. It makes some colors fade in such a weird and ugly way.

Shades of dark gray aren't uniform. This is visible in darker environments (like in the bedroom at night).
This is most visible on Reddit dark mode. I can see it on Spotify if I look hard.

OLED screens in general are more problematic displaying dark shapes of grey compared to IPS panels. This has to do with manufacturing tolerances of individual light-emitting pixels at low current. This, in particular, is the reason why most OLED panels employ PWM (flickering) to control brightness, applying higher current in short pulses compared to applying constant low current. If you search for "LG G Flex 2 screen uniformity", you'll see some pretty extreme example of this.
That said, with each individual OLED panel and depending on your personal tolerances, your luck may vary. My Mi 8 is very acceptable when displaying dark shades of grey (I don't notice the problem even if it is there). If you received my Mi 8, there is a chance you could spot the issue because your personal tolerance of the problem is lower than mine. My wife uses an LG G Flex 2 and never notices the (very real) problem with its display uniformity (I do!)
In other words, most users are happy with their displays, but it does not mean all of them got a perfect one.

That's normal. It happens with every AMOLED display. I have a Samsung S8 and it happens in the same way.
It's something common, don't be scared.

That's right I have this issue on my note 9 too. My previous note 9 had this and devices in store had this.

"Aren't uniform" meaning you cannot tell the difference in the shades? Grey is a very challenging and controversial color for AMOLED. Use the Display Tester app by Braintrapp from Google Play and try the "Gamma detection" app when you have your device, you'll see it displayed horizontally. Swipe up and down (with the device of course held horizontally, or "landscape" mode) to change the brightness and look at how it displays grey at different brightness levels. Very weird huh?! It's perfectly normal.
I guess you can say it is a "grey area" for AMOLED...

Also, did you attempt to set a static color contrast within the Settings? The display does change tones automatically by default. According to the Display Tester app by Braintrapp from Google Play, it seems that our display does not support Wide Color Gamut. Some of the hues seem to be a tiny bit off according to it on my display, and this is coming from someone who owns a Mi 8 with a "perfect" AMOLED display.

Every oled screen is uneven, clearly visible on dark gray backround in dark room. Even samsungs don't have perfect screens.

I have the same issue with pixel 2 xl
I've owned the nexus 6p, OnePlus 5, 5t, 6 and the mi 8.
Tbh I think the mi8 has the worst AMOLED display of all of them when it comes to dark backgrounds in low light. It has like a "jelly scrolling" effect
My avatar on YouTube is solid black and I use the dark mode of the YouTube app....when I'm scrolling through comments i leave on videos with the screen brightness down low there's a noticable trailing effect.
It's not enough to make me want to return it but it's a problem I didn't have with any of the other devices I listed.
I prefer AMOLED to LCD any day.

I bought the op6 with PayPal credit. I bought two and with the op6t coming I decided to sell them instead of paying the remaining balance. At first I intended to go with 6t but in the end I thought I'd try something different.
Since the Nexus 6p all of my phones have been stock/near stock. I thought I'd try something else. I like stock better because I feel there's a learning curve to miui if you're used to stock but overall I like the mi 8. I wish I would've waited for the mi mix 3 though. The sliding design is nice.
The full screen gesture navigation is the best button free navigation I've tried. I haven't used the buttons since nearly the beginning of owning it. It'll suck when I decide to use a non-xiaomi device. I didn't like OnePlus or stock gesture navigation
well i gotta say, i was afraid to get an bad Screen, too. Especially after reading threads like this. But i can say my screen is perfectly fine. even in lowest brightness. Yes The grays are not that gray as on the screen as on lcd, but thats the same with all amoled screens, and you only see it when u have the exact same app on an lcd screen beside your phone. For the rest its super fine.
Yeah. After 3+ months of using the phone, I’m learning to just enjoy it naturally without nitpicking details that don’t practically affect my everyday experience.
If we treat the phone like a baby, there’s an endless list of concerns.
But if you really just use it like you would (without analyzing scenarios that don’t come naturally), so many of these issues don’t matter at the end of the day.
I think the green is much more problematic on amoled displays (on low brightness / Oled Tool)

That's exactly what I found.
Now, having said that, we don't use oled tools for practical purposes.
I basically don't notice the issue at all under normal use.
In other words, if I never did nitpick at first, 3 years of normal daily use could pass without me noticing the issue at all.
Received my Pixel 4 XL a few days ago and one thing I noticed straight away was how yellow the screen was compared to my Pixel 3 XL.
Only picture I have is uploaded as my daughter has already taken my old phone.
Have you tried disabling Ambient EQ under display settings?

This setting is already off, should have mentioned this above. My display is even more yellow when enabled.

There's a few things it could be, but I feel Google calibrated it this way at the factory as I too noticed my display is warmer but not yellow. Some do say that the yellow hue could also be the adhesive still fully curing. Although I'm not too sure how relevant that is now a days with the newer optically clear adhesives. This usually will alleviate itself through normal usage within a few days to a week. I'm thinking it's more to do with Google's calibration + the panel lottery and you could of gotten a dud. Custom kernel could probably alleviate the issue when you can adjust kcal and play with RGB. But you might want to start a RMA if the issue doesn't go away as I have seen other reports with people bringing up how yellowish their display looks.
Mine is also very warm. Ambient EQ is off and the brightness is high.
It'll be interesting to see if this plays out as "This is how we intended it." or if it's a manufacturing error.

Contacted Google who asked me to check a few options which were already disabled.
Outcome RMA, will check how the new unit looks when delivered.
Same here. It's not a defect, just the way they calibrated it. I actually like it a bit better than the bluish version. That seems to mess with my eyes, whereas this feels very comfortable. Still, it would be nice if they offer us a slider in the future.
I have Ambient EQ on but the short time I had it turned off the colors seemed cool. Closer to a blueish hue.

Mine doesn't have a yellow tint, not even with Ambient EQ on (at least not in the typical environments I use my phone). I really dislike warmer screen tones, so I would have definitely noticed, but mine is leaning more towards the cooler side for sure.
No issues on my white 128 XL. In fact mine looks better than my wife's iPhone 11 pro. her's looks way warmer. I think the display is fantastic on the 4. Best pixel screen yet.
64gb black P4 and I notice a slightly warm almost green tint under 30% brightness. Above 50 it's only slightly warmer than my pixel 3 and at 80+ it's identical
It might have something to do with the refresh rate on the screen. I can notice it shifting between 60Hz and 90Hz. That color shift introduces some yellow from 90 to 60 and removes yellow the opposite way around. You can pick the device to 90Hz in the developer settings, but you're trading off battery life for it.
Yellow here too, off angle it goes white so it's a definite flaw, if it was white straight face on then went yellow off angle this is normal, I'm on my second unit and unfortunately it's worse than my first original, why i hate warm, the people with the same issue as mine will understand, you also lose colour pop when the screen is yellow, simple look at your warm screen look at the colours on text the angle your phone at watch the colours pop better, 100% what people are experiencing is oled manufacturing flaw, I'm still undecided if I'm trying a third but if i do and it's the same or worse again I'm getting a refund until these manufacturers pull their finger out with oled.
Yep, mines super yellow compared to my LG V30, and there's no way to tweak the colors and reduce the red tint.
Its warm but look much better than 3 xl display which has the green tint color.

The 4 XL has a warmer, pink tint. I see more of a blue tint on the 3 XL. I personally prefer cooler tints to warmer or pink ones

Agreed, mine looks awesome to me!
Mine only looks good when the screen brightness is at max. 70% and less, looks terrible. Darker then usual. Yellow/orange. Compared to my Note 10 which is very bright all around. Really want to keep the pixel over the Note but I'm not sure. Have 15 days to decide
