ASUS launch Official NEXUS 7 16G in HONG KONG with price HKD2398~USD309.11 - Nexus 7 General

:crying:
HONG KONG have not consumption tax, sale tax, etc
and HONG KONG have not sale Nexus though play store
only can buy in local electronic store, so no extra shipping free too
but the price is HKD2398~USD309.11
seems will have stock on next week
don't know why hong kong have a US60+ price
as hong kong already no tax and extra shipping
and if you buy the nexus from aus, you should know the nexus 7 is shipping from HONG KONG
poor HK people
:crying::crying::crying::crying:

I don't know the point of your post.
But consider that shipping cost from the states to Asia cost anywhere usd20-50. The added cost is quite reasonable to sell it for 50 more.
I doubt any seller will sell without profit...

I am.also come from Hong Kong.
Don't ask why that the price is $2397 someone said that Asus Hong Kong set this price is because of someone can use a similar prices to get one nexus 7.
So, if you hate this price, please don't buy it.
The price is acceptable.

uhhh... its not shipping from the states to Asia... look on your nexus 7 box, its made in China.
therefore unreasonable.
I had a similar issue with google too. I'm in Australia, and yet despite our country being closer to the location of manufacture, and despite our currency being more or less on par with the US currency, we still had to fork out an extra $50 as well.

my bad english
it is a metting, asus give a few nexus 7 to people try it

@ Downwiththebanksters Your English is pretty good for a Taiwanese. Don't get me wrong, I'm actually half-Taiwanese and go to Taiwan frequently to visit my relatives but I rarely meet anyone with even passable English
Back to topic, I seriously doubt the Nexus 7 that is going to be sold in Hong Kong is through official channels. Reason being as Google said, this device is made for the Play Store. So much so that the user experience for people living outside the US and UK is watered down and definitely not as fun. Hence, to introduce it prematurely, before Google manages to settle the copyright issues and publication issues especially with its arch-enemy; the Chinese Government, Hong Kong as you may be. Would be counter to what they are trying to do with the Nexus line of products.
Having said that however, there is still a small possibility Asus may sell it in Hong Kong, however, I think they would go official in Taiwan before they do so in Hong Kong.

price hkd2200 is us249 plus a forwarder airfreight cost from us to hong hong and it is just one nexus 7
the actual freight cost from china to US are packed many nexus 7 in containers and ship to US thought seafreight
and nexus 7 in containers from china to hong kong just use truck, much cheaper
if only compare that hong kong's nexus 7 have more potential prices drop, at least should back to normal price similar US249

The Play Store does not allow payments here in Taiwan because the government insists on consumer protection. They require all purchases, software included, to have a 7 day money back if not satisfied guarantee. When they enforced this policy a little over a year ago Apple immediately changed it's return policy and complied with Taiwanese law, while Google has decided to stick with it's foolish 30 minute policy. While I have little love for Apple, Google, with it's close CIA ties, does not hold the consumer/humanity in as much esteem as the folks in Cupertino do. I have spoken with several developers about this and they say the 30min rule was designed to attract/mollify game developers by preventing folks from downloading games and then deleting them for refund after they "win"/complete them. Someone once said that it sometimes takes more than 30 minutes just to set download and some programs up! All that said, right now the Play store here is crippled by a well meaning government and an intransigent Google.

So with my above comments you bring an interesting wrinkle to the discussion about Taiwan's Play Store and how Google's Senior Vice President of Weasels and Thieves, no doubt a visionary leader, sees the seven day rule. You can see insisting on the 30min rule may have been forward looking to the eventual launch of media. I might be able to get as much as I want from a digital copy of The New Yorker in 30mins, delete it and not pay, but with 7 days I could make a leisurely read of it. I could also watch the uncut version of Seediq Bale 40 times in one week and not pay. Likewise with music. I don't know how returns/refunds/cancellations are handled in iTunes but I'm guessing Apple consumers love to spend money and show it off, so may be less likely to abuse the refund policy (perhaps simply not smart enough to figure it out?). The Android side may be more attractive to those of us who like free, open, and donate our meager excesses to ROM devs, The Pirate Party, and The Electronic Frontier Foundation. or ?
The arguments about the Play Store content aside, i.e. Google views the N7 in the same way Amazon sells the Kindle at a loss to get folks to consume media, I honestly think Google did this to simply drive market share by making a truly great affordable tablet. To ascribe profit motive to Google seems almost far fetched as the open source nature of Android makes it a loss to Google. The Android tablet's have struggled to gain traction, and so I think all that the N7 is: affordable, great hardware, buttery, is an attempt to get a large amount of people to get their first tablet. In the ecosystem wars these tablets will not only build market share, but also mind share in the tablet space, which up until now has been dominated by Apple. I have to refer to the N7 as an iPad to most folks, including my Taiwanese wife; to call it a tablet draws blank stares. So you are right when you view the Play Store as being an integral component of the sale of this device in the dying empires, but the population of the "West", whatever that means, comes in well under a billion. I think Google sees us out here in the rest of the world, the other 6ish billion of us, as an important market too.
Traditionally Apple has had between 10-12% of the market - the Gossip Girl types - who will always need to, and can, pay more for the "Apple experience". Apple's business model, which is based on high prices burnishing the brand, brings it's main goal of high margins. I can't see them changing. Affordable has no cachet. That leaves Google, with it's open source model, to harvest the 99%. I think that is what the N7 is truly about, and thus think Goog teamed with Asus to sell this because they needed Asus's global retail presence; something Google neither has, nor wants, to shift a ton of these devices. They said, "Lets tweak the Kindle model a bit to fit our plans and take it global." This is Google's shot across the iPad's bow, as is the Micro$oft Surface. Oh, and will there be a 7" iPad?
That went way into the weeds on what this thread is actually about, but that is my NT$0.6, and an answer to your question about why/if the N7 should, and will, come to Asia and the rest of the world sooner than later.
All that said are we back to thinking the HK retailers are not selling these tablets with the full permission of Google and/or Asus? Fortress is not known for selling grey market product is it?

It's still cheaper
Dear All,
I didn't wait and I purchased my N7 from Canada from BestBuy when they had pre-orders. I paid CAN$249.99 + tax + environmental fee was $294. Which at time of currency exchange to HK$2,300. I've yet to receive it as my relatives are not back from Canada to Hong Kong. I knew Nexus products in Hong Kong would take some time to get to market but this time was quite fast. I wanted to wait till it came to Hong Kong but the reviews and the "Butter" smooth UI was hard to resist. I was surpirsed to see it in the local newspaper it was selling for less then $2400 at Fortress. To enlighten some posters on Hong Kong electronics. If any of the "Big Electronic" stores (Broadway, Fortress, Gome, Wilson Electonics etc.) sells ANY electronic item it an official item from the respective manufacturer (eg. ASUS Hong Kong) distributed through the local authorized dealers such as the "Big Electronic" stores. Therefore, it is not a grey market / water down product. Also, Hong Kong and China are separate in terms of how all the retail business is carried out. Why is Hong Kong always one of the first to receive any mobile or electronic item? We actually sell authorized genuine products and manufacturers trust the Hong Kong retailers. In China, well...you know the story. We also have a market that has a large turn over rate as we are hungry for electronics. A large percentage of consumers switch for new models all the time as there is a large second hand market to make money to subsidize or appetite for new electronics. Electronics in Hong Kong will be more inexpensive for most items since we don't have sales tax on top of the MSRP. In the States and Canada, you slap the tax on and it is a different story. It is the norm to wait for 2-3 months when price drops by half or more when new models come into the market. The rate of new products that actually hit retail is really fast whereas in U.S. and Canada you have to wait and wait and wait.....which by the time it reaches retail level your behind again.
At the end, it doesn't matter when you get your product but what product you chosen that is the best suits yourself is the mpost important thing.

Sorry, I don't mean any disrespect in last post.
But I am just saying regardless of where it is shipped from.
If you must buy from Google US store, and consider the middle man profit.
Then the shipping cost is quite reasonable for $2400.
P.S. I am no seller, so don't bash me on that.
I too wish "GOOGLE" should sell direct to HK and China market.
It was the same case with Nexus One when it was released, HK/China market were never Google's priority.
I brought directly from Google Store, and the shipping to Asia cost me a fortune :'(
I think they should be more like Apple, which is doing a great job.
Their iPad/iPhone either ship direct from Shenzhen or Singapore to HK,
Which is much more reasonable... maybe we should start a online petition?

I dunno about it not being Google's priority as much as it is the Chicoms do not want anything they can't censor or flat out control. They have created their own twitterfacebookgoogle and make it hard to use, or completely firewall off "western" services. All Chinese SGS2's came stuck with Baidu as the search engine instead of Google, so Google knows exactly where it's corporate priorities are. As I'm an anti globalist, and thus firmly believe in protecting national industries in order to maintain full employment and GDP, this protectionism may have benefits....but what Google provides is simply truth, facts, and opinion . Truth is a universal human right! To paraphrase Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men: "Chicoms* can't handle the truth."
And so we're back to thinking this is an official launch for the N7 as Fortress is a proper venue for a launch?
*the party, not the people...remember that Jackie Chan!

Hi
Has there been an official announcement about this? I have not seen any press releases for this. Where are you getting your information from OP?
BTW the HK$2.4k mark I think is roughly what I thought they would charge, if that is the case.
Incidentally you can buy it from B&H or Adorama for about US$300 with shipping included (c. HK$2,340), however at present they don't have any stock.

Fortress won't...

All official launches are by the manufacturers themselves with the help of some media at a specific location other then the big electronic stores. They usually have the sexy local models which is a good perk.

can this be true, i have mine on pre-order
probably and a 500 quid it can stay in stock !! Thats a shocking price
I have not ordered from there, but i have been told 9th June at least , thats is expensive but how they got them so quick before everyone else
Thanks
Brian
Well thay are a massive company now and i guess have a close working relationship with HTC . Or they are grey imports in which case you will pay way way over the odds with a warranty in china or bermuda or somewhere silly.
The problem is is they are notorious for selling all new releases above the recommended price . I personally wont use them anymore as i feel they rip people off . By next week when everyone has stock they will drop there price but still not competetively !
It is us the consumer that keeps them afloat and as long as we keep buying from them at over inflated prices then who is the fool . I would love everyone to boycott them because of this but that urge for a new device can be pretty hard o resist at times . They know this and like leaches bleed you .
I have posted several posts in their forums on their over pricing and every single one of them has been removed . I think that speaks for itself really.
Yeah, they do tend to price things ridiculously. The funny thing is I don't mind a small premium in exchange for knowing that they are the cutting-edge gadget provider, who will get us the coolest gadgets first, but the key word is 'small'.
I think when the N95 8GB came out they had it at around £600 for a week or so.
expansys appear to have some tie up with htc - if you go through www.htc.com and goto uk as country then accesory shop - you end up on a site hosted by expansys - so I think that they are probably not grey imports and I also think they are milking the cash cow for being able to get them early....
Malarcy
Yeah, Expansys do seem to have them in stock. Personally, I'd rather save near £100 by waiting for a few days.
Yep Expansys is a rip off, they charge stupidly high prices for their phones...well the new upcoming ones like the Diamond. When i bought my N95 8gb , they were selling it for around £600!!!...thankfully i got one off ebay for £350 brand new.
Im actually dreading seeing the price for the new SE Xperia X1...wouldnt be surprised if they sell that at well over £600.
lol EXPANSYS uped the price again . They are so obvious !!
I would never buy from them again. Loads of other retailers around that are a lot cheaper
They got stung trying to do grey HP imports years ago, as non EU items sold in UK are not allowed, I would be very very suprised if they are grey imports, as they are breaking the law and I suspect most people would be sending them back, we have very good consumer laws here in UK.
Hello,
I ordered my Diamond english EU on May 7 in expansys.pt and today I received confirmation that I sent the Diamond English UK, tomorrow already have it here in Portugal
Someone can tell me if there is any difference between the English version EU and UK English ?!!??

Grey Imports doesn't mean they are grey ;o) . I'm sure they are black. A grey import is a machine (Touch Diamond) that is for reasale in another country being sold in the wrong country.
EG Touch Diamonds ment for China being sold in the UK are classed as grey imports. Your warranty can only be delt with in China .. Hope this helps and thanks for making me smile.

Already seen that before posting.
The website shows it as UK item, they would be selling counterfeit goods if they are not UK (or EU), which means trading standards would be very interested.
And like you said HTC will be livid.
Expansys says that the warranty is HTC's Worldwide warranty. Still the price is a little bit too much.
Someone on the expansys forums has posted saying they ARE imports. Oh dear! I would say punish expansys and everyone send them back under the various laws they have broken and/or the sale of goods act/distant selling laws.
Bit odd that all the defaults are to Hong Kong
Makes you wonder where they were sourced from ... Still, loving it .. only had it a couple of hours and everyone in the office wants a play!
that's because it is a Hong Kong device that is not covered by HTC's global warranty.
If it dies, you'd have to send it back to Hong Kong to get it fixed!
An EU English device would default to Seattle timezones etc. Not Hong Kong.

Does anyone know a good play in Hong Kong to buy in-store?

I know alot of the places it quite expensive around 850 usd. and online its only 700-725
does anyone know of a store that you could buy it in person closer to the online price?
there are so many places here i dont even know where to start looking, any experienced HK shopping help would be appreciated.
or even a buy online and in-store pickup. i just want to make sure i can check the screen and if all is good so i dont have to deal with shipping it back and fourth.
thanks.
If you're shopping in Hong Kong for electronics you're probably best off staying away from Mong Kok and all the major shopping centers - they're looking for foreigners to fleece. Make sure you have a solid idea of how much you can buy it for online, then be prepared to haggle. They won't give you the price you want right off the bat, so be prepared to walk away. Most will call you back to negotiate.
At the end of the day, I found it was best to buy from eBay (ironically shipped from Singapore) and avoid the games they play at the Hong Kong Electronics markets. Also, the exchange rate fluctuates and you could end up losing money just converting to HKD.

i understand ebay is the cheapest the reason i want to get it in store is so i can view the screen and make sure its good, i have friends here in HK i can shop back for warranty but would rather not.
and considering almost EVERYONE reports a screen problem id rather pay 50 bux more and know its ok.
so if you or anyone have an actual suggestion for a place to go that would be awesome.

not an online store, i know it can be gotten online.
does anyone know of the cheapest store in HK that would see it so i can look at it before buying?
AHAH! i finally found a place that shows in-store prices and seems to be about usd 715-750
here is this site
http://www.price.com.hk/
you can compare many stores so i could check out the device in store before buying it.
I played with and eventually bought my Note a few days ago at Fortress, Melbourne Plaza, Queens Rd, Central. (Near Central MTR). I'm pretty sure you could do the same in all the Fortress stores as they have big mobile display areas.
It's pretty trustworthy as it's a major chain, but as such you don't get the larger discounts you might be able to track down in Mongkok. Mine was $5998 HKD.

Nexus 7 from handtec.co.uk

I just wanted to post about handtec trying to rip off people looking to buy a nexus 7 from them.
I know most people in the UK would just buy from else where but handtec are one of the few sellers who ship internationally.
I have just moved to hong kong and previously bought a HTC one x from them without VAT which was quite a good deal, and I thought I would try get the nexus 7 from them as well as their service previously was pretty good.
However they list the price of the 16gb version at £238.80 (£199 + VAT) I then talked to them via online chat to verify if this was just a typo as it should be £199 including VAT and hence about £165 without vat. I was told by their rep that this was the best price available, I told them no, the RRP is £199 including VAT and that is what all the other retailers are selling them for, the rep replied that yes that is correct, so I asked them why they are selling for more than the RRP to which I just got ignored, so i asked if they are going to sell at this higher price and again got no response, I waited another 10 mins on the chat window and then when i had no reply i closed it.
this happened a week ago and I see they still have not updated the price. I think that this is their way to get some more money from international buyers who can't nexus 7 elsewhere as its not released and I'm pretty disappointed that they would try to do this and not sell at the RRP.
Supply and demand...
Retailers have the right to sell products at whatever price they choose.
Consumers have the right to choose who they buy from.
If you don't like the price, buy from someone else. They might not have the best price/deal, but it is a bit of a stretch to call them a ripoff.
A ripoff is more like when they give you something other than what they said they were going to give you.
Sent from my Nexus 7
Have you tried their price match?
Clove sells it for even worse price - £220 for 16GB excluding VAT.

Disappointed with pricing outside google play

You may or may not have heard about this but if you live in a country where purchasing devices from google play isn't available(which is like 98% of the countries),you will have to pay a whopping 549 euros for the 16gb nexus 4(that's the pricing in Austria, dunno about the rest of the world but it will most likely be the same).I will actually have to pay more than double the original price of a phone that got 16gb non expandable storage. And if I bought it online,I will have to sacrifice local warranty. It just looks like google is doing their best to force me not to get their nexus devices. There's just a big hype about how cheap the nexus 4 is with cutting-edge hardware ignoring the fact that only people living in certain countries can get it for that price. Why can't google be fair ? Guess I might end up getting Gnote 2,at least it got a micro SD slot.
Wow. This sucks. Nice find! For that price, I'd definitely go for a Note II!
(My cousin is in the states so he'll order it for me and send it here to India through my uncle's shipping company - Win win for me!)

i am personally ready to be robbed by those retail stores. it sucks but then the price tag wasn't the deciding factor.
Maybe see if someone from another country can buy it from the play store and have them mail it to you? Providing the shipping cost is realistic?
I'll get one from Germany too.
If anyone wants to order for me send me a PM.
I am screwed, since I live in the Netherlands. No Playstore here. Hopefully the online shops will sell against Playstore prices, or less Sucks I can't order from European Playstores btw, so much for European 'shop integration'.
Yep, I can't but devices from the play store here either.... :/ just hope its at a reasonable price or else I'll have to ask someone to buy for me... its not there on expansys yet either

I think we should wait official pricing for other countries. However, if in Italy the prices will be so high, I'll buy it online from another European country.

Well, it's worth a trip to Germany.
But I have doubts this will really happen. That would be pretty stupid of Google. Look at the price if the nexus tablet. That's also pretty cheap for what it has to offer.

I completely agree, I live in Chile and the carriers here are just thieves, the galaxy nexus retails here for around 750 USD contract free.
Gladly my brother is going to USA on december and he might get one N4 for me there at a normal price.
Does anyone knows if you can buy a nexus product online? Becouse whenever I try to go to the website says its restricted to my country, I dont know if its possible to shop online outside the US. I wouldnt care not having warranty if I pay 300 box.

I think that Google is selling the product below the MSRP because they expect people to post some of those saved euros into producst on the store.
It's 549€ here as well, and also in Sweden as far as i know.
Thank goodness my girlfriend lives in Germany.
It would be awesome if some XDA peeps located in Europe and have access to Playstores could help out their fellow European members
here in Israel i will be thank's full if it will Retail for 600$.
I'm sure it'll come in time. Do you have the N7 yet?

Nope, not yet but well LG said that the nexus 4 will be available in the middle east end of november so I assume Egypt is included.Nexus devices do take a long time to be available here. The galaxy nexus for example took freakin 6 months and it was exclusive to vodafone.Asus Egypt said that the nexus 7 should be available in mid october but so far nothing...

Order Pixels to unavailable countries

Hello all, I have a general question about Pixel phones.
I have wanted to own one for a long time, but sadly in Hong Kong, the last phones I could order directly from Play Store were Nexus phones. We can occasionally find them in grey markets, but this is such an unpopular device that it's always a second hand phone sold by some tourist passing by....
I would really like to get away from One Plus and Xiaomi and am not interested in Samsung and such. So I decided that this year, I'd get myself a Pixel 5 for Christmas
So my question, anybody had experience using some online store to get Pixel phones to countries where they are not officially sold?
I could ask friends or family back in France to help me to order it then send, but I'm always a little wary about using the "normal" post channels to ship something like this which is expensive and could be blocked at the customs.
Any experience and advice to share?
If the Google Store price and subsequent postage is within your budget, and you know you won't have any issues with customs, you could order it from the German Google Store and a mail forwarding service like mailbox.de to ship it from Germany to your country.
Google does not ship in other countries, only the ones they have a store, like Germany. You sign up at mailboxde and they give you an address within Germany. You order the phone through the Google Store, and put that address for delivery. When the phone arrives there, they will notify you and you can forward it to your own address.
Now, there are other forwarding services too but I've only used mailboxde, and that a few years ago when I got the first OnePlus device. Also I have no idea how much it would cost to ship the package from Germany to your country, for Greece it was around 20 euros extra and took two to three working days to arrive.

I have a Pixel 5 from Amazon UK due to be delivered by DHL to my home in Lai Chi Kok today... No problem ordering internationally, no VAT to pay, a few days for shipping (would be quicker if Amazon hadn't sent it around the country for a couple of days) - but it is out of stock right now. I've used a bunch of non-local phones in Hong Kong over the years - including an HTC Desire I bought from Fnac in Paris while transiting, which had been rooted in a cafe before I got on the plane to HK

Oh cool, thanks!
I did not know that Amazon could do delivery like this to other countries for those devices... I usually see the message "not available to ship to HK so I just generally give up
I'll probably do like this later when the phone is more easily available.
Thanks again for the kind reply :highfive:
Guys I have bad news. I just got my Pixel 5 from UK here in Kuwait but 5g is not working. Its not because of the bands but Google/Carrier has to turn it on Very sad day

Ah. sounds bad, and I see how it must be disappointing if you wanted to use it.
But really, 5G, I feel it's not something so essential in our lives
In any case, it is one of the risks of import like this indeed....
Pixel 5 in Hong Kong
I ordered mine from Amazon UK. I got a Pixel 5 UK version. Shipping direct to Hong Kong, so no VAT. Shipping is not expensive at amazon. However, it will only work in 4G. It will not work with the 5G network in Hong Kong. If you plan on using it in a different country, check. It is not a frequency issue. The frequency is supported, but it is other software issue. If anyone have answer to this, please let me know.
Thanks.
I ordered my phone through Amazon UK using a forward company to my country, had to pay VAT when it arrived which made me a bit sad
All my sadness disappeared when I sent a claim for Bose headphones and they validated my order. expecting them to ship it in two weeks.

actually, yeah they did but I never used them. Sold them for around $230 or something similar
Thanks a lot for info. Last one - what forwarding service have you used, please?
But I guess as there´s limit 2 order per adress, it would be already unusable anyway
