Suggest a Ubuntu Port Tool. - Ubuntu Touch Ports to Android

I hope this is not wrong section. I belive there are people who want ubuntu on there phones but dont know how. So I am asking if its possible to have a tool that has a easy UI and the function has to make a image from ubuntu to flash it on our phones.
I thought it work like this. We copy/select the files what is needed (from CM 10.1) in the programm and the programm use these files to make a ubuntu.img.
I know its not easy or fast to make or i am really thinking simple. But i thought the process to make ubuntu is always the same. Maybe we must correct the files but it would nice to have something that makes it easier.
Please no flame or disscussion its just a idea. If someone thinks its a good idea than a "thanks" would be a sign that the idea was good
If the idea is stupid i can live with that too

I agree with this. It'd have to get the ubuntu made kernel for UP-OS and strip the nexus (insert device here) hardware drivers, then choose a zip of your phones kernel, then insert the hardware drivers, recompile into a flashable img and then so forth. That'd be kind of a layout I suppose.
Edit #1
Or maybe even merge and replace the two kernels from the UP-OS into your phone's kernel so (device kernel drivers) > UP-OS kernel and overwrite the drivers, then build img, then flash and test (after making a backup of coursee!) Of course it'd be different devices for everyone sort of, but it'd pull partition numbers and such from configured .config files (this would require collaboration from everyone to get their individual devices partiton numbers). And also you would (if no git source for merging is available) use your own kernel for your phone.
Edit #2
Maybe I can ask for the author of rom-porting tools (thread on here somewhere in the vast sea of XDA) and ask to use his source for the basics. It'd be very similar, if not same. And also ill talk to some devs about it as well.
There is a community on google+ called Ubuntu Mobile Development, its very small so far, but would like too see people get on. I'll also be posting for both my device (Droid 4) and general Ubuntu Touch.

Considering that is is so easy to port the Ubuntu Phone os to other phones (as the CM base has been ported over to many devices), I don't see any benefit to an easy-to-use GUI tool as it would just encourage more people to build an ubuntu phone port to their device, start a thread for their new ROM, and sadly not have the knowledge to maintain it for the people who use the created ROM. Luckily the ubuntu mobile OS is device independent (EG it has no custom kernel and all you need the same is the ARM architecture) so all a porter would do is need to add a bit of drivers to the CM-bases and compile it.
Edit: However when the project has matured a little bit I would like to see something like dsixda's ROM kitchen but customized for the ubuntu phone OS.

It needs it's own unique WHAT?

If you can't build it using Ubuntu then why bother touching it? Learn to build cyanogenmod from source. After that you'll find it easy to build Ubuntu.
Edit: You can't make a program because you need to add a few lines to the defconfig of the kernel. To add lines to the defconfig you need kernel source.
Kind Regards
Dave

I don't think there's a need for a tool, there's more to it on the developer side then you'd imagine. Porting is very simple but if you think other people won't understand the instructions, make a simple, step by step video..

Oh, I thought you meant it needed it's own unique code as in some sort of activation code or something.
Sidenote:
The way I see it what the port tool would need to do is this:
+Extract zip of CM build for the device to a directory
+Clone the git repository for the [kernel, device support] for the device you want to port (Reads the build.prop from the CM zip maybe?)
-Remove the useless binaries that are unneeded by Ubuntu touch in the CM zip
#Modify the kernel config to allow Ubuntu touch to boot
+Compile kernel/other necessary software and place them in the proper locations in the extracted CM directory
+Download the Ubuntu toch image and place it in the extracted CM directory
+Allow the user to modify some additional properties
+Package the image back into a flash-able zip
Do I have this^^ right? :cyclops:

excellent news here, one step closer to a completely working rom.
Thank you very much for this FM radio
Great!!!
Thanks to you all, awesome news i have heard today...
I thought this was a waste of time but as TuneIn Radio drops on 3G a lot it will actually be very useful!
WTF! Really! If you did! You are a god! And dont Forget Mike!
Waiting for this!!
Fyodor 2 good news from this post.
1.- We can now enable Radio
2.- You are raelly woring full with us, so now Arco and I we have more support.
I know this is not your patch, but thanks for noticing that this is valid for aour devices, without you I will never noticed about this.
So Thanks
Man.. You Rock.. this is something I always wanted.. Kudos to you.. Can I get it ?.. I can be a beta tester so to say .
Thanks
Thanks! It works on CM7 RC0 7002
Work on nFinity0.81GB , its amazing !!!
This works on all ROMs for Tatto, Now the problem is that this do not create /dev/radio0 that is how the FM app works. We need to manage to make it run with the muiu FM app

I don't think we should port the miui FM app for Tattoo 'cause the kernel is very different from the one miui supports. Any one familiar with java could write a simple apk for us. One of the most important thing is to understand the hcitool commands used by mike. That will help to develop a new FM app.
Btw, do you have any docs about those TI compatible hcitool commands?

You are right about kernel. I think we can try to work in 2 steps:
- Fast app. As you say create an app tu run this commands ( I will look also for the description of those commands ) Anyone that can help us to find them will be wellcomed.
- Create a fake driver at /sed/radio0 to run this commands ( that will be more difficult of course, but will make our device more compatible for future apps )
What do you think?

I like the comman line interface, it's so nerd-friendly
:S How i say it in English ....
can i say this script that it start FM tool when its activate !?
start Script --> Script activate Radio Driver and Fake driver to work * --> FM Tool start and work with driver
* driver can work with one tool only so script activate 2 drivers and work with fake driver
i hope you understand what i mean
my english is not so good XD

Yes, I totally agree with your first point. And It's better to be compatible with other devices. However, more codes will lead to more maintainance. I prefer to invite somebody to write a specified simple but handy app for us. If we wanna create a fake /dev/radio0 to port the miui FM app, as you know, the AOSP framework must be applied with that BIG patch. As a AOSP lover, I'm not willing to see it happens.
Mike is also working on a simple app with appinventor released by google. But the site was blocked by my ISP(evil China gov), so I even can't have a chance to learn how to create an android app quickly.

Don't worry I can do it.
Also Filipepferraz will help for sure and some others will support or help us. More people working more speed we will reach
If there are java writers here that want to help, all help will be good. I'll create this night a git with permissions for all that will want to add his knowledge to this project,

Sure np.
I bought 3 different keyboards (Swiftkey, Thumbkeyboard and Smart keyboard Pro), but since ICS is out, stock just feels better. :]
thank you! i've been wanting to do this mod, but i'm too lazy to decompile and mod the keyboard.
Thanks, I was looking for something like this.
Now, I grabbed your sources to do some other modifications I want but I have trouble importing them into Eclipse. I created a new android project with existing sources and selected the ./java folder from your repo. It imported it correctly and the sources are there but I get reference errors everywhere. I have the SDK installed (API ver. 14) and it's selected at Build Path properties. Also I modified and compiled other android applications in the past but they came together with project files for eclipse.
Any help would really be appreciated.

You need the whole ICS source to build the keyboard, LatinIME is dependant on the whole source and needs to be built with make.
You just fork my branch, make changes and compile your own version. Here's a good tutorial how to make a working compile env. in Virtualbox: http://www.freeyourandroid.com/guide/compile-ics

Hey, I'm Mouhab
I was thinking about a windows tool that help themers in making themes easier and faster ,and when i opened some MIUI v4 and CM9 themes and after reading some theming tutorials I found that :
1. Every single icon should be with the its IMT (Internet media name)
2. And every button, label, and so on should have i long name
3. XML values for everything themes (apps, settings, and so on)
4. And making a theme takes a very long time
So, my tool will do the following:
1. Renaming icons (You will have only to enter the APK name that appears on your mobile and the tool will change it to its IMT)
2. XML editor built on the values in original XMLs of themes I checked
3. HTML (XML) color picker
4. Editing images color values
5. Building the APK (dunno about this yet)
Now I need your opinion on this idea since I started the project 2 days ago and need your help in adding more features to the tool and make a data base for all apk’s name

Currently I do not know how to port it to linux, but I will look into it and give it a try! Regarding the error, it was about mono and .NET, I fixed those but it just crashes once it opens. Tried with both wine and playonlinux(like a graphical front end for wine) with same results.

PD! First official Mod on the NExus 5 from the old fauthful Xperia PLAY. Nice. Is this sort of like the Adreno Mod for the Xperia PLAY? Or different? Either way good to see you here from the old XP stompin ground
Here we go lol. Looks cool, but is there a way to make it an init.d script?

Hello, I'm slightly noobish with some aspects of Android but here is my issue: I did exactly as the installation guide instructed, and I can't get the manager installed. Same app recommended, managed after couple of hours to get the files on my Nexus 5, run as SU, but says options can't be found. it lists them, but follows with saying they are not in the folder or available. And i can't manage to enter the command.
If this is major nooblike text just take it easy here and help me out.
Hey guys! This might be a dumb question, but does this mod have any potential for conflict with the dalvik and bionic mod, listed here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537299?
I ask, because I'm thinking of compiling an AOSP build with both mods baked in, and I want to be aware of potential pitfalls. Thanks for any/all feedback, and thank you for (what appears to be) an excellent mod.

Hi jjhiza,
No issue between both mods (I've tested), it's two different things.
You can test by yourself before if you want, you just need to edit the build.prop and add manually (at least more convenient for me than running the script) the different lines from the script here or from the source link and flash the Dalvik/Bionic patches.
About the real improvement of this mod (I mean this Adreno Catalyst mod), I let you judge by yourself...

The Script is still in Alpha, which means the code is compiled and the base features are existen but i cant get it to execute its main features without hiccups, im going to rebuild it now to see how it goes...
