A Horrible experience with HTC ONE. - Sprint HTC One (M7)

I'm going to tell a very disturbing story about HTC One
So, I got an HTC One like over a month. Everything's going great, amazing phone, lovely front camera. Just a week later, I got the Pink Tint issue. I rooted the phone, and installed the BadBoyz ROM (Sprint). I thought the camera was a software issue but nope, the ROM didn't helped about the Pink Tint camera. So, I decided that I'm gonna have to stick with this issue, since I live in Bangladesh, there's no official HTC store/retailer. So I got over with it.
Last week, my brother was testing an old Audio system, pretty old, like it's 15 years old, nonetheless, he was using an A/V Cable (Red, White input with 3.5mm output) and my HTC One. The phone's output was superb, he tested the Audio set couple of times. As he had to pull out the 3.55m jack a couple of times. After few attempts, just when he plugged in the jack, there's a static noise coming from the speakers, tried to play a music, found that only the RIGHT channel works. I instantly plugged in my earphones and found to have the same problem. Alas, I tried 5-6 earphones, but no help. There's absolutely no way that it's gonna play properly.
And to make it worse, my screen locked, I tried to unlock it, but it won't unlock or show anything. I had about 35% of charge. My phone won't Boot at all. I tried going to bootloader menu no help, I tried pressing the Power and Volume buttons for 5 minutes, no help at all. I became heartbroken. I plugged in my chargers for 1 hour, the red LED won't blink, I plugged in the USB cable to PC, no nothing. Next day I took it to a local shop, they said " We have to open your phone and check whether the battery's ok or not". Without proper disassembling tools, they opened the phone, and found out that an IC(beside the battery) became short, so they pumped it up, and voila the phone was working, I told them about the earphone jack issue, they said, the only way to fix the earphone jack is to get the whole set from another HTC One. And since it's a new phone in my country(came 3-4 months ago) there's no spare parts available.
NOW, I'm STUCK WITH MY EARPHONES not working. After assembling, the phone looks pretty crap, as there are some open spaces over the volume button. NOW, MY PHONE LOOKS SHI*T.

Ouch man, that's rough. I'm not sure what to tell you other than I hope something can be done about it soon. But if it makes you feel any better, I went four months applying to jobs with no phone because my original HTC evo shorted out and my contract wasn't up for the next three months. That was fun... but once they have more phones in, they should indeed do something about it.

Sounds like you're Bad Luck Brian.

I wanna see pics

Bro the problem is your from Bangladesh using a top of the line phone, people don't have crazy phones like that there, so obviously repairing it will be an issue?
I might sound harsh but I used to live in Pakistan and I had similar issue with my video games. :crying:
What you should have done is, send it outside the country to get it fixed properly, did you try contacting HTC about what they can do?
P.S. What do you do when your PC parts malfunction, how do you handle warranty claims then?

What exactly does pumping up an integrated circuit mean?

In my country, there are lots of experts for iPhone(they can disassemble and iphone and fix your lock screen button and re-assemble it within 5 minutes) , Samsung but for HTC they are very amateur. And there's official retailer shop of Apple and Samsung but not HTC. I really love HTC because of their build quality. iOS is **** and samsung is plastic XD.
And for PC parts, we have official retailers of all products.
@akrod2as : I'm not sure myself, the mechanic said that there's a problem with the voltage, when he connects the both ends with a electronic meter, there's no response from 2 different points, but other points are fine, so he had to work on those points. He used a soldering iron to fix it.

Ok those pics aren't as bad as I thought it'd be but still that's pretty bad lol

usb terminal broken

i dont know when it happened but i noticed it today when my car charger stopped working. i looked at the usb port on the phone and noticed the usb terminal was partially bent downward. the phone still charges with the regular charger and still syncs, so until it completely stops working ill just leave it. PPCtechs will fix it for $80. htc told me that most likely it wont be covered under warranty but they need to look at it first to determine if i broke it. I asked the rep how do they determine that. At that point i realized it was a bunch of BS. he said the charge to repair is $305. and even if its not covered and i decide to let PPCtechs fix it, i still have to pay a $28 dollar inspection fee.
Shame, mine broke like that too but it was within a few days of getting it so T-Mobile changed the handset.
It really shouldn't be possible to break the USB connector. I know we should exercise care (and I do now!) but it's a critical point of failure. I still don't know how I broke mine.

Mine is bent a tad but still syncs fine. If you google you get thousands reporting this, but HTC doesn't fix it in new models. Cheap component. If it breaks on me I'll be getting another windows smartphone by a different mfr.
As nice as the HTC products are, such a critical component is made as poor as can be. If that point fails, you can't charge your phone or perform sync functions. This means a bricked device. What gives?
yea im already looking for a replacement device. my last nokia had a rare joystick failure. im not even sure what to get next. i waited way too long for this phone to release and paid top dollar to have it when it first came out. now i finally have my phone set up perfect and its broken.
Same thing here... hasn't broken yet but it's slightly bent on on the right side of the mini usb on the phone.
here is the direct number to htc. 425-861-9174. once i find the right person to talk to i give the ext. maybe if more than one person callls the same person at htc they will give in.

Hey, that's the exact same for me. The right side is slightly sloped down.
If someone does get a extension I'll be sure to call!
well that is strange that all 3 of us have it broken the same exact way . at this point it looks like a manufacture issue. ill get a direct extension tomorrow. and ill talk to my lawyer on friday.
Cant Aim
I am also on my way to a Broken USB. I know how my USB broke and it was pretty dumb. I have been in a dark place many times and pushed the stylus in the port (upper right corner). I have moved it back into place and put a little Super Glue in there. I don’t think this will last. So I was just wondering if the USB problems everyone is having could be caused from the same. I am looking for a cover to prevent this from happening again and if anyone knows of one please let me know. DUHHHHHHH!
If anyone ends up with a broken usb port and wants to sell the phone please PM me...I know someone that can fix it (had to have it fixed on my mda) and would like to upgrade my old phone.

I found this place that does HTC repairs. Positive feedback from people on other forums.
http://pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~HTC_Kaiser-71~area~repairs.htm
Since I paid $400 for my phone, worth the $60 pricetag to have this repaired if it breaks. Just thought others would like to know if they ever meet the cold reality.
In my book it is poor business practice to design core components cheaply , so that it will inflate sales when failures occur. (So that you or your carrier will have to eat the cost when a USB port breaks. Pure profit for HTC)
Definitely makes me angry the port is so cheaply made. Of all things on a phone to be cheaply made. Make the PTT button we never use cheap, make the camera cheap (since it's not amazing anyway), make anything cheap BUT the USB port.
The USB port is the central way to charge the phone, apply updates, sync it, it's the lifeblood of the phone. Without it, the phone is trash unless repaired. But thats probably the whole point.
Make cheap USB port
Breaks
Carrier foots cost for buying replacement phone for customer. (Or customer foots cost)
PROFIT FOR HTC!
Wow... I thought it was just me. Here's a pic of mine, I think it shows it pretty well. Like I said before, it's still works fine... doesn't look very pretty though. I've been babying my Tilt and haven't had any maltreatment. This is just from normal wear and tear...

Amazing.
Looks like a picture of my tilt with the USB bent in the exact same way.
A coworker checked out my new phone the second day I got it and said "You already bent your USB?" and I had to b.s. and say "No the plug is designed that way" he was like "ahh.... thats not right."
HTC oughta fixit!
this is why the right side is bent on usb port

..cuz you must have accidentally poked the stylus in the usb port while meaning to poke into the reset hole. I've had this happen a couple of nights ago while driving where I had to reset the device and in the dark I pushed the stylus in the usb port a couple of times instead of the reset one.. I only realized this when I synced the device next and found it to not recognize it and also not charge via either the computer or wall charger. So, I looked at the usb port and there it was.. slightly bent down from the right edge of the inner pins.
Whether its flimsy or not (which I totally agree that it is after my gentle inserting of the stylus just a couple of times) HTC should have given a rubber/soft cover for the port. Would make a lot of difference.
I managed to fix mine for now though.

You are probably right... don't remember doing this but it sounds like the likely cause.
sorry to hear that a few people are quick to blame themselves. the only place i accidentally put my stylus is between the keyboard and the display. i did that twice. i rarely use the stylus and unike others i would have remebered it. mine does look exactly like the one in the pic. in another forum i was told it was designed to be bent? anyway bad design imho and sice im not the only one thbks should be fixed. i build and sell 500-700 thousand dollar homes. when someone is unhappy i sometimes have to bite the bullet and take it out of my pocket. its called good business.
anyone get theirs fixed yet? now none of my charge and sync cable works. The only cable that works is the original charger and the original sync cable.im sure i will have to get this repaired soon. i have called HTC corporate but nothing so far.
fixed mine..
I had the same thing happen to mine after 2 weeks of ownership. I took it to a ATT dealer and he tried a different charger and nothing worked. He said its a dead USB port and to exchange it. Mine looked that picture above as well.. I ended up fixing it by taking a flat edge butter knife and gently straightening it out so it was flat again. I plugged it in and bingo worked like new. I can't believe that these ports are so sensitive.
the usb port on my 8125 broke a long time ago and i just went to a repair shop.. he fixed it with a brand new one in about 20 min and charged me 35 bucks.

ORA USB Cradle (Thoughts?)

Im considering buying this cradle
http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=194466
As I have a £15 voucher to spend at expansys and I thought it would be useful and nice to get a cradle. I dont want to spend much over the free £15 and so this one came to my attention It looks quite nice, I did have one thought though, how will it fair when flashing ect.. does it act just like a usb cable or will it have problems going through the flashing process?
Also I want to get some peoples opinions on it,
Thanks in advance

Looks identical to the one I bought from Clove the other day. Only difference is that yours seems able to charge a spare battery as well.
The stand has a low centre of gravity and appears robust. The plastic guard at the back helps locate the device onto the connector AND hold the device securely in place.
On mine you can sync and charge at the same time provided you use the charging device that should come with the stand.
Is this enough detail for you or do you want more?

Details and other images availalbe on the link above.
It connects via the micro usb and the 3.5mm headphone socket. There is a 3.5mm socket on the back so that you can put it through external speakers. The only downside is that if you dont connect it to external speakers then you dont hear the phone if call or message comes in as it thinks its connected to a headset (not a big problem for me as i ignore most until im ready to speak or reply to them). It holds my HD2 solidly .

Ahh thanks for the response Funny, I can get THAT one two at expansys, it looks the same from the picture http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=194343 So it would cost me £20 aswell lol. Its just that is pushing it a bit price wise (I like to hoard money lol)
@ [*],
Not used my version of the stand for anything else yet other than charging the device and syncing/file transfer routines which it does well. Can't see why running in bootloader mode should be a problem but I have not tried it yet.
As I said mine is the one from Clove not the one you are on about; however, apart from the spare battery slot, they look very very similar.
Why don't you just order it and give it a try. If you don't like it then send it back under the 7 day distance selling rules and get your money back (I am assuming you live in the UK).

Yeah maybe your right, I should just go for it, I will probably go for that cheaper one, (the first one I posted) as if you look at the other one a couple of posts up, it would cost me £20 instead of £10 (with vouchers applied) and the only difference appears to be (havent fully read through it yet) the speaker? which isnt a big deal to me.
And I would appreciate if you could test the bootloader/flashing, of course your not obliged to as I know its a pain, but I would really appreciate it (maybe flash a radio?)
And yeah, UK

I have noticed that there is a missing part on the new bored but I assumed its would be fine as it me be and after market replacement. But with the new bored installed I don't get signal or sound from the rear speaker! It does charge in my computer and from the wall but it's now a bit tedious with no signal and no sound.
Broken port board -
New board -
any advice would be massively grateful

Not very difficult to deduce that you made a mistake when replacing it. No you should follow the video on YouTube for possible repairs - to be honest: I think now would be a good time for a repair center - not ruin more by trying yourself.

Tbh theres n9thing that can go wrong its a simple unscrew of 9 screws to take or the back plastic.
Then 3 screws to take the speaker casing off, then take off the ribon cable and atenna.
Install then new one.
Its £60 at the repair centre as the it was broken because of the previous owners fault and cannot be mended under warrenty.

You got a bunk board.
You need to get a new board from a more reputable manufacturer.
---------- Post added at 03:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:49 AM ----------
I think that your replacement is NOT OEM. Look at the labeling.
Mine looks exactly like your. The only thing I've noticed with mine, is although I have a signal, in places where I never dropped before, it drops
out. Does anyone know if the "tape" on the factory one is conductive, and is acting like some sort of passive radiator for the GSM antenna?
It will peel off the old board. I noticed that both my original & replacement (I've since ordered another board from a different vendor) have the
same revision stamps & other info. Both boards appear identical, except for the gray/silver tape. The factory one has it, the replacement
does not.
Well they guy I got it from on eBay told me it was an oem and art but now looking at it its missing a chip as on the oem part there are 3 in a line the new one doesn't have the middle one and yeah it doesn't have the foil on the back either and I think this my be a factor as well
I got the new board for £8.99 as well so I wouldn't have thought it was a genuine oem part.

Here is a dealer on ebay who does sell exact part with the tape in the back
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-USB-Cha...153?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ac1421059
Now I just came to realize that the 2 usb ports I bought from china don't have the antenna tape in the back, other than that, the part is exactly the same. My replaced part works good, charges the phone and antenna works fine. BUT BUT...Now that the OP mentioned about lack of signal and the other person mentioned about dropped calls; I seem to have the same issue. My signal was weak to begin with in my office now I have almost no signal in my home as well. In order to make calls, I have to be next to a window. I am wondering if the antenna tape in the back really does make the difference in getting good signal and bad. I am not sure as I live in dominican republic and the signal changes from time to time as the cell company turns on a tower and shuts off another one to reduce costs. I wonder if anyone could check the tape in the back to see if its just a plastic take or some sort of metal reflective material? I wonder if I can make something similar to improve my signal. Unfortunately I threw away my original bad part so I can't go back to it to compare the difference in the new and old usb port. So please if you are going to peel off the tape from the back of USB port board of your n7000, take pictures and do list your observation.
Note to the person who says there is a missing chip on the new board::
you had mentioned there was a chip missing on the new board. I saw that AT&T i717 charging port has 3 chips so you may have the wrong usb port to begin with.

Here is a dealer on ebay who does sell exact part with the tape in the back

Now I just came to realize that the 2 usb ports I bought from china don't have the antenna tape in the back, other than that, the part is exactly the same. My replaced part works good, charges the phone and antenna works fine. The reason iv noticed about the oem bored having three chips is because I took it to a friend at and ex local Sammy repair store. The ones he had in had the exact same tape on the back and the three chips in a row.
If you look at my replacement there isn't any rape and there's only 2 chips. What I'm thinking is that the missing chip must be for sound and the tape on the rear must be fore the antenna? Just a guess. He wants £20 for that chip and tbf I didn't get it because I didn't have the cash on me at that time hence I got the one on eBay.
Regarding your signal, must be due to the network and not down to the board I'm assuming as my note atm has got the new chip in so I can at least charge it without having to take out the battery. When I have the new board in I don't get any signal at all it only shows up as a circle with a link through. So if your picking up signal, sound and can charge you must have the right one I assume?

[HARDWARE FIX] Xperia Z not charging or booting

Problem: Xperia Z is not charging, not turning on, false battery stats or stuck in an non-software-caused bootloop... sometimes It's caused by a broken battery connector on the mainboard
try swapping battery first!
Ok guys... I present you...
XPERIA Z BATTERY BUG ***HARDWARE FIX***
It's a cheap n' dirty fix! Use at your own risk - I don't care if your house burned down because of this... :silly:
STEP 1 - Remove the Backcover (see this youtube video how to do it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNrtamZuf7E)
STEP 2 - Remove the Battery (Be very carefull not to crack your display doing this...)
STEP 3 - Bend Battery Connector Pins

}
STEP 4 - Get a very thin cable (eg. from a USB Cable you cut down) and a soldering iron
STEP 5 - Solder the cable to the battery pinpoint >> TH << and on to the testing pinpoint on the mainboard according to my images
Should look like this...
STEP 6 - Assemble everything together again and connect the phone to the original Sony Charger
STEP 7 - Wait 2-3h for the handset to be charged
STEP 8 *additional* - Boot up device and install Sony Mobile Battery Test from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/general/sony-mobile-battery-testing-app-version-t2527932 <--- (You can just take the .apk from the .rar file and install it)
STEP 9
SUCCESS! If your screen looks like this everything went fine:
Image of finished repair...I put some red plasti-dip around the fix-cable to isolate it
---
Notes:
Battery stats should be now OK - If not solder battery pinpoint EN to the PCB pinpoint behind (not under)
So what was the problem?
Sony's battery connector on the PCB is a cheap plastic sh*t... there are 6 connection points... 2 for +, 2 for -, 1 for temperature (TN - located middle top) and one EN ??? after some time the TN signal does not connect correctly causing this problem. you can't charge the battery and/or get false battery stats...if the battery is empty you can't boot anymore even with ac charger connected...
On my screenshot on top you see the battery temperature is 34° and green - OK - everything working fine
But without the fix you'lI get this:
Complete bull****...minus -30°...I'm not even close to Sibiria
So one step was to get rid of this fault... Since I got sometimes the right values (about + 30°C) when I was holding the connection between battery and pcb together with my fingers while device was on, I thought it is a problem with the connection.
The main problem on my two devices was that they didn't charge... When connected to AC -> bootloop ...
I got a fully charged battery and found this problem with the battery test app.. Fixing the battery connection to transmit correct temperature data made it possible to charge the battery fully again...battery stats are working and correct...I can now charge the devices as normal (in turned on or off state) ... i did buy new batterys but used the old ones for the fix and they work perfectly
TESTED ON TWO DEVICES WITH BOOTLOOP / NOT CHARGING and they are working FULLY again!!!!
Note if you open your device it may not be water resistant anymore...you can buy a new seal on ebay
If it worked for you please say thanks/like
thx 2 hunix for his software fix thread
Thanks for the thread, quickstyler, I had lost all hope before checking this and hunix's thread. I am yet to try the hardware fix as I wanted to first check if I have the same issue using the battery tester. I ran into some problem with the software fix, please check my post in the other thread and reply if you can help with anything.
This guy explains the whole battery temperature thing.

My phone only work when plugged in... Blackout when unplugged... Will this fix work?
Same problem My phone only work when plugged in... Blackout when unplugged... Will this fix work?
I have a problem regarding my power system, I don't know what it is but my phone only works when I plug it into my laptop, it doesnt work on wall chargers and I did try few wall chargers. I have replaced the battery but result is still the same.
I tried your method but now my XZ doesn't wanna start at all, even on laptop, which was the only way to operate it.
After soldering those two points, my XZ only flashed a white screen for a second and then dies, when I tried to turn it on, it shows SONY for a second and then it dies again ...
Flashtool still can recognize it tho .... and I did flashed its original firmware, but then again, it still does not want to start ..
Any idea what happen?

Bricked xperia z
hi guys , i have a problem with my sony z ,
when I pressing power ,i got the vibrate ,but there is no sony logo , even when i reflashed the ftf file ,still no chance,
thanks
My Z has started to do this. It won't charge at all and is showing completely the wrong temperature for the battery. So it looks like I need to do what's in the OP.
Quick question though...how did you put the phone back together again? What did you stick the back on with?

I'm going to use an old handset for a bit, while someone who's better at soldering than me tries the method in the OP. If I'm lucky, I'll get my phone back. If not, I guess I'll be using ICS for ages!

Don't forget that the sale of goods act covers us in the UK. Your phone might still be eligible for free repair.
Look into it before dismantling it and definitely voiding your warranty.
Edit - Here's an (oldish) article about your rights in the UK. Also, if you unlocked your bootloader your warranty IS NOT voided.

Ah, a fellow countryman. Excellent!
I could always try unrooting my phone as that definitely does kill my warranty. To be honest, I was thinking about taking it down to my local Carphone Warehouse. They offer a repair service and I've always found them to be helpful.
The stores near here are staffed with nerds which is just perfect for an old modder like me..

It being rooted will cause them to try to tell you it voids your warranty, but flashing, rooting and bootloader unlocking etc does not void warranty for hardware defects in all EU member states and that includes us here in the UK. Here's some information on that.
If I were you I would flash back to stock and quote the sale of goods act at the retailer. They are bound by law to repair or replace at no cost to you.

Excuse me while I suppress a shudder at having a...a...stock phone..
That's not a bad idea. I'll download Emma, go back to you-know-what, and try taking it in tomorrow. Watch this space!
I was curious about using the Sale Of Goods Act. It's clearly not fit for purpose if it won't last the full length of the contract. It certainly wouldn't be the first Sony phone I've had that went wrong after a year.
And yet, I'll still get a Z4 when it comes out. I think I may be a fanboy...

cracked back resolved (uk)

just a quick note to say that after a week away with the sony repair centre in the uk i have got my z3 compact back.
i suffered from the back glass getting a crack from one corner to the opposite one without any bangs or drops.i had the device from new for 6 days.
sony have repaired the device under warranty without cost.
the only cost i had was £8 special delivery with royal mail to send it in.
i know others have reported getting their devices back without the cable and plug they had to send in but this was not the case for me.
just wanted to share my experience if anybody else has this problem, although i think it is fairly rare and hopefully only happens on early models.
cheers

Hi, my girlfriend has had the same thing happen to her 7 day old Z3 Compact. No signs of any sort of dropping or misuse, just a diagonal crack on the back case has appeared. Can I ask please, as you're in the UK too, how did you go about reporting/sorting this out? Straight to Sony or via your network provider? Did you contact them face-to-face, phone or email?
Any help will be appreciated as I feel a bit guilty by recommending she got this phone and getting her away from her usual iPhone.

hi mate, my phone is a unlocked model that i purchased on my own so i had to deal with sony direct.
i registered a xperia account and linked my phone to it to get the years warranty.then i raised a repair through this.they sent me the details of where to send it freepost. you will need your own packaging they supply nothing, also they suggest just dropping it in the post but i used royal mail special delivery.from then on the whole communication from them was awful.they say you can track the whole process and its updated all the time.this is bull .i had to contact them to get them to even acknowledge they even go my phone.i had no update on the whole process of them looking and repairing the device.it was repaired free of charge and the whole process was 1 week door to door.it came back via royal mail also.i was pleased with this of course but they never followed up with what may have caused the problem to start with.
do you have any ideas?
about 2 days before my crack appeared i shot about 2 mins of 4k video and the device got very warm.it was only put back in my pocket where it would have stayed until cooled.
let me know how your repair goes.
best of luck
I have yet to find out if the warranty will cover this. Surprised me one morning, 1 long diagonal crack on the back of my Z3 Compact.

Oh mate sorry to hear that. Providing there is nothing on it to make it appear it could have been dropped then you'll be fine.

The rear panel of mine cracked from side to side under the Sony logo shortly after filming in 4k (it shut down due to overheating). To be fair, it cracked when I walked into the corner of a table with the phone in my pocket (screen inwards - old habits...). There were other firmware issues as well but the rear panel was the one that caused me most concern as it completely killed any semblance of water-resistance. Sony repaired and returned in about a week at no cost to me other that postage (see below). I would agree that their repair tracking facility is cack - when they sent me an email to say it was on its way back, they sent the wrong tracking code.
Mine is an O2 device but like you it was registered with them and I just raised a ticket online - I also paid for Next Day Special as I wasn't sticking it in the post without insurance. I never sent my charger as that wasn't the issue (and I didn't want to lose it).
