Moto G EXT? - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I saw the Moto G EXT on Consumer Cellular website.
https://www.consumercellular.com/Info/PhoneDetails/619
It looks exactly the same as Moto G (2014). Doesn't anyone know the exact model number on it? Is it the same as the XT1064? Thanks.

Hi diamondjoker5 - does that Moto G EXT from Consumer Cellular have much bloat on it?
I'm a new Consumer Cellular customer and was thinking about getting a Moto G 2014 for my wife. I'd like to ensure timely Android updates and was going to get an unlocked phone directly from Motorola. I don't know if Consumer Cellular will slow down that update process or not.
The only Consumer Cellular app that I'm aware of is My Consumer Cellular, which is actually pretty useful for their customers.

Only thing I see on here is all gapps, + motorola alert app, motorola assist app, motorola migration app, and my consumer cellular app.
Just got the phone unlocked for $2.19 yesterday. Tmobile sim works without any problems.
The real question is what stock rom do you flash it with?

Thanks for the quick update!
What do you do to get the phone unlocked for $2.19?
The other question I'm trying to chase an answer down on is if apps will be able to be moved to SD memory once 5.0 Lollipop comes along. No one may be able to answer that question until after it's released.

I used one of the ebay sellers that offer unlocking services. They go through unlock scout as the provider. Took a couple of hours to get the unlock code.
PM me if you need more details.
From what i remember, once rooted i was able to use link2sd to force move apps and data to sd card on my previous phones.

supposely the AWS one

Was thinking of one of these for my son. They are on Sears site for $133 now.
How is the data speed on T-Mobile, I think it's more optimized for HSPA AT&T so H2O would likely work better.

Can you provide a link of ebay seller through which you have got Moto G - unlocked ?

Can I request a little more info regarding AWS portion? Which exact ROM/modem combo has it? Anyone who recently got Consumer Cellular model and using unlocked with T-mobile can provide an input? Thanks again.

Just wanted to share my experience to help others. I bought the Moto G EXT from Consumer Cellular and it is the exact same hardware as the unlocked Moto G 2nd Gen my wife has. The firmware/ROM is different than the unlocked version. As others have mentioned there really isn't much bloat or anything too crazy. Some features such as tethering have been removed from the settings and the Consumer Cellular app is pre-installed an you cannot remove it. There were some other minor things locked down but nothing major or intrusive.
I wanted to just get the stock image on there just because. Also since there were some changes to the firmware (like removing tethering) I wasn't sure how quickly CC would be updating to Lollipop and wanted to be able to update as soon as I could. I got my unlock code from Motorola and unlocked the bootloader (which to be clear is different than the SIM unlock code mentioned in earlier posts).
I was able to get the Blur_Version.21.11.17.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.US firmware installed and everything works as expected; I was back to stock and couldn't find any differences between my phone and my wife's. My only caveat was I was not able to re-lock the bootloader after installing the stock firmware. I thought I would be able too since it would be a stock, signed image from Motorola but I kept getting errors on the phone saying "Failed to validate System Image" and an error on the command line stating "sst lock failure!"
I tried a couple different ways to lock it but never could. I am not sure if I have to get the original firmware from Consumer cellular (I wasn't able to find it) to be able to lock it again, but I am assuming that is what is needed. I forgot to write down the original firmware name was but I know it was different than the System Version that now displays so it must have been a special CC build. Even if I had it I am not sure where I could find it. I searched for a little bit without luck but it is a pretty new phone from CC so maybe with time it will show up.
It isn't that big of a deal to me to run with an unlocked bootloader, but I sort of wish I would have just paid the extra $30 or so and got the unlocked one from Best Buy or Amazon instead of the Moto G EXT from CC so I could lock it if I wanted/needed to.

I got a great deal on the moto g ext at sears for $112(using coupons and surprise points)and $29 shwy points back. The system version is 21.11.23.titan_ccaws_AWSCC.en.US cc, build number KXB21.85-23. The original moto g had instructions stickied in the general forum on how to flash stock firmware without unlocking bootlocker using mfastboot. Could I use those instructions to flash retail firmware for the moto g 2014? Is there stock firmware available for the moto g 2014(xt 1064)? . Any help would be appreciated . My main reason is to get tether option in the settings which is missing from consumer cellular ROM and be able to receive updates from motorola.

@bellj949 Can you please link to a guide that can be used to install the generic firmware on the consumer cellular version?
@edog11 were you able to find a way to flash without unlocking bootloader?

I used this FAQ for most of my info about this process - http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/help/wip-frequently-questions-moto-g-2nd-gen-t2875723 - and there is a link specifically to this page in that FAQ - http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/restore-to-stock-t2873657. Some of the flashes got errors on the phone but it all worked just fine even though I received the errors. Wish I would have noted all the different messages on the phone and command line for reference. Now I have my phone setup like I want and don't want to have to go through everything again. Once Lollipop is available for the Moto G 2014 I will be going through the same process and will take better notes.
I have the single SIM US GSM Moto G 2014 (XT1064) so I downloaded the Blur_Version.21.11.17.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.US firmware from - http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=36 - instead of using the link from the guide. If you have a different model you will need a different firmware. Remove the battery cover to find which XTnnnn version you have.
As noted above once you do this you will not be able to re-lock the bootloader. Or maybe I am doing something wrong and that is why I am not able to re-lock. If anyone was able to relock the CC version with the stock firmware please share your steps!

I think you can use the same instructions given for moto g 1st generation and use the moto g 2nd genetation retail AWS firmware. I may wait until there is a consumer cellular firmware for the moto g 2nd generation available in case something goes wrong.
If someone wants to try, here's is link for flashing stock firmware for moto g 1st generation without unlocking bootloader.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219
Here is moto g 2nd generation firmware.
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=36

Thank you both. Although I have previously rooted and flashed various android phones and tablets, I think I will wait till there is a strong development community for the Moto G, which will be able to help if anything goes wrong during flashing.
I just hope that once Motorola releases the Lollipop update, Consumer Cellular won't be that far behind. Or I'll just flash it at time if Consumer Cellular are lagging behind in update.

I sent an email to CC to see if they will be upgrading to Lollipop and if so how soon. This is the response I received:
"At this time, Consumer Cellular does not support updates for any Android phones that we sell. Upgrading the Operating System on your phone would void the warranty."
I'm wasn't sure if they are saying they do not provide support if I upgrade the phone or if they were saying they will not be upgrading to Lollipop. So I sent another email to verify that they will not be updating the OS and pushing an OTA update to the phone. This is the response I received:
"At this time, Consumer Cellular does not support updates for any Android device that we sell."
It doesn't sounds like they have any plans to upgrade the phone.

That is just too bad.
Now I'll just wait till we have the official Lollipop on the Moto G and then flash the generic unlocked ROM. Keeping it stock till then in case I need to claim warranty.
And to get the official updates from Motorola, all I have to do is to flash the unlocked rom as mentioned by the guide by @bellj949 and I will start getting the OTA updates automatically or will I need to flash the Lollipop rom manually?

CC version is 21.11.23 while the retail verions is 21.11.17. Probably that's why you cannot flash without unlocking the bootloader because the phone sees it as a "downgrade"
Unlocked Moto G 2014 is getting the update today. Is anyone with the CC rom getting the update yet? How about those with stock XT1063 rom and unlocked bootloader, do you get the update?

[Q] Moto X AT&T stock version, does it come with a lock?

Hi guys,
total n00b question.
A friend of mine brought an AT&T Moto X (1st generation) phone with him for me from the U.S. to Germany.
He bought it from the motorola.com page directly 2 years ago through the Thanksgiving promo, never got it activated and its still stock and everything, never used before.
He paid the full retail price of 400$ at the time, does it however still come with a sim/netlock?
I thought since it didn't come with a contract (where you pay only a few $ and you are bound to a 1y/2y contract) and he paid the full 400$ for it, it doesn't have any sim/net lock?
Sadly I don't have a nano sim card to try it out, before I order one from my carrier I was hoping someone could help me out with this
I know that simlock threads are not allowed, I'm not asking for an unlock, just whether a retail 400$ phone has that lock or not?
Thanks in advance!
If it's stock and on 4.4.2 or below, invest in Sunshine to unlock your bootloader. I'm not sure if AT&T sim-locked their Moto Xs. They should provide the code for free, if necessary, though since the phone was paid in full.
Thanks for the quick reply, already looked into SuneShine for unlocking the BL (its a shame that I didn't pick the T-Mobile version over the AT&T, hmm)
But worth spending another 25$ for it!
Now I'm still curious about the sim/netlock.
From what I found out by googling and reading for hours, if it has a simlock, AT&T will not unlock it cause I've never been a customer and it never was hooked up to an AT&T account, kinda bad if you ask me for a full price cell phone... The T-Mobile version comes 100% sim and BL unlocked...
Moto chat support cant help, they didn't even know that there are different versions of the Moto X 1st Gen...
It's usually less than 20 dollars to unlock them on a website that offers Sim unlocking. Not sure if at&t devices are usually OK to do so, but I would think they are. The carriers usually charge more even... In Canada anyway. ?
OK, thanks a lot!
I'm really just surprised that if you pay the full retail price for a phone it can still be sim/netlocked...
Hope you guys don't mind asking me another few questions, I'm just transiting over from my Razr I so a few things are different
If I don't need a custom recovery but planning on installing a different official Moto firmware which is signed by Moto (would love to flash the EU firmware to have full German language support) do I still need to unlock the BL or will this work with a locked BL since its an official Moto firmware?
Also are there any files I should not flash, therefore remove from the xml?
And I know that the BL unlock has nothing to do with the sim unlock, but any change if I unlock the BL and flash a different firmware, I won't need to enter a sim unlock code then?
I'm just trying to get as many answers before I try it and find out the "hard" way it won't work and that it results in a completely bricked device in the end...
AND sorry, but another question
Are the LTE bands hardware or software coded? Cause we use different bands over here in Europe and I know from the Sony Z1C you can activate all bands software-wise, so I was thinking maybe its the same with the Moto X?
Thanks again!

Wrong section, This is the 2013 section. And this thread has nothing to do with your question, that's called thread hijacking.
So you should go to the Moto X 2014 section, and if you don't see a thread on the same sort of topic.... Then post your own thread in the Q&A section. ?
So I read an insane number of pages and somewhere I found this great page:
https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/?#/
Long story short, I reveived a nano sim card today, AT&T Moto X is locked, contacted AT&T via the above mentioned website, it took 2 days and today I received my sim unlock code via email from AT&T for free, no account with them needed and it works!

With the bootloader on the ATT XT1058 being locked, you'll only be able to flash Moto Signed Roms for your phone's CID or carrier branding. You will not be able to flash the XT1052 EU rom, or other X roms. Only the ATT XT1058.
If you are lucky and your ATT XT1058 has not yet been upgraded to Android 4.4.4 and bootoader 30.B7, you should be able to use JCase's Sunshine tool to unlock the bootloader. Note: Because this is a HACK, do NOT try to re-lock the bootloader after using it, or you will be permanently bootloader locked.

I don't believe flashing a different ROM would give you SIM unlock.
You're only option is getting it from the Carrier if you meet their terms/conditions. Or buying a SIM unlock code from an online seller.

I've read different things. So I can't say for sure which is correct.
I know that the Verizon X, XT1060, initially game supporting only LTE Band 13. Band 4 was later enabled by firmware update.
But I've also seen posts of some losing their entire cellular radio when flashing other model's full roms, and not getting it back by flashing the correct rom. (I don't recall the full details, sorry!).
On other phones, I've seen things like "edits" to turn on other bands. But no so for the 2013 X.
So I wouldn't mess with it.
Thanks for the explanations @KidJoe
Until know I didn't know that a signed Moto firmware is not just bound to the model but also to a CID, always thought you could flash any region firmware over the phone as long as its the same model.
Sunshine is def. an option, I didn't take the OTA (even thou it reminds me at least once a day cause I suspected already there would be more exploits available with a lower android OS.
SIM unlock is no problem anymore, AT&T provided me the unlock key via website request (took me a while to find that link, thou) and you don't need to have an account with them and the phone does NOT need to be hooked to an AT&T contract.
About the LTE bands:
OK, I don't want to mess with the modem / radio and lose all bands in the end but could I just flash the system files from the EU version via fastboot?
Which files should I flash and which files should I avoid flashing?
Basicially what I'm trying to achieve is getting German as android language and not just have German as keyboard language.
Or is German included in the CM11 as well cause then I imagine it would be much easier to just flash CM11 without damaging any bands...
All in all, I'm just looking for a fully stable KK OS that is in German
Thanks again for your replies!

You could try using mFastboot and flash only System.img... BUT!!!! Its going to cause issues with OTA updates, and having mismatched parts always increases the risks for bricking and/or things just not working correctly!! So I usually don't recommend mixing things up.

I've not messed with adding additional languages. Nor have I used CM as I like my Moto features too much, and stock (rooted) runs just fine here.

sIm Lock, aka carrier lock, has nothing to do with bootloader unlock.
To bootloader unlock, you need the unique code for the phone. Likely due to carrier contracts, Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock code for ATT, Verizon, or Republic Wireless, but does for many/most other carriers. At one point there was a web site in China and a Middleman who access to Moto's list or database of codes which included even those Moto didn't publicly make available (I.e ATT, VZW, RW) but that dried up a while ago. JCase found a vulnerability in the bootloader on the 2013 X, and came out with/updated his Sunshine tool with a hack exploiting that vulnerability to unlock the bootloader (without having the unique code) on the 2013 X too, but it doesn't work once the X has been upgraded to 4.4.4. Sunshine DOES work on the 2013 X if it has never been upgraded past 4.4.3.
Thanks for letting me know. I got the phone in August and it was on 4.4.3, but then I accidentally installed 4.4.4. If only I had known that I wouldn't be able to root it after that.... It really sucks because I really want Viper4Android on my Moto X.

Jcase has been teasing us with word of the next sunshine version working for 4.4.4. It was projected to release early January but they must not be done putting all their awesome into that sauce. Be patient and I bet you'll have an unlocked bl soon enough.
In an abundance of caution, I would probably hold off taking the lollipop update coming soon in case it patches whatever vulnerability they are exploiting.

4.4.3 or 4.4.2? because I wasn't aware that there was a 4.4.3 for ATT.
I checked it as soon as I got it and it was 4.4.3. A few days after, a notification for 4.4.4 popped up and I accidentally hit install. I got the phone August 10th, 2014.

India? What model X do you have, and from what carrier?
Often times the 2013 X in EMEA has been an XT1052.
Have you tried checking Moto's home page to get the unlock code? https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth

Mine is Asian retail Indian model so how to find if unlocking is avbl?
If I proceed with (moto x US) and generate serial key of my phone using SDK tools and check for unlock bootloader in site, my phn won't get bricked or anything right? That's a doubt I have.

You should be able to use the same web site to get the bootloader unlock code, many others with the European and Asian XT1052 have been able to get their bootloader unlock code there.
If you get the code in an email, it will either work, or give you an error if its not the right code. It will not brick your phone.

See the one stop shop for root thread in general. Right at the top of the page.
All current root methods are there, based on device versions and state. ?
There is a untested way to unlock the bootloader but is very risky, you must open your device. Anyway if you are so brave to try this procedure http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra/general/droid-ultra-maxx-brick-recovery-t2830806 look at this guide at the second point, first you must drill the plate on the ram chip, you must short the right pin on your moto x to ground (i attach a photo, pointed by the orange arrow) then follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-resurrecting-bricked-moto-x-t2629057
THIS IS A VERY RISKY PROCEDURE: YOU CAN BRICK YOUR DEVICE!!!
I wouldn't. ^^^^
Lol
thankyou

India? What model X do you have, and from what carrier?
Often times the 2013 X in EMEA has been an XT1052.
Have you tried checking Moto's home page to get the unlock code? https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth

[Q] Moto X 2013 not receiving updates

I have Moto X (2013), I want to know why my phone is still on 4.4.2 KitKat and not getting any newer updates? Others running 4.4.4 KitKat and about to get Android L, what's wrong with my phone? I have tried resetting my phone couple of times and tried Motorola Device Manager too but no luck. I don't know whether I have XT1049 or XT1058 because I got this phone from a friend, he just gave it away and I am not living in a country where I can get Motorola Support. I thought I had XT1049, I contacted Republic Wireless, they checked my IMEI number and told me that it's not their phone, I contacted Motorola's online support they told me by looking at the IMEI number it's XT1058 AT&T phone but when I connect my phone to my computer it says "XT1049 is connected to the computer" and in pictures "details" I can see that the picture is taken by XT1049, I am so confused. Kindly help, I want updates coming to my phone

Your device belongs with ACG Regional Carriers. It is currently at 4.4.2 only. You can see your model in the lower area of your back panel..
Check out moto site for your device. Your "System Version" in the screen shot is "161.44.38.ghost_row.ACGLTE.en.US". Check out...

I really don't have any idea how to unlock and root or use any custom rom, I am afraid I will break my phone if I try, suggest anything else or tell me how to do it in an easiest way

OTA updates are really up to your carrier and/or Motorola. You will seen no updates, until THEY make them available.
When the bootloader is locked, you can only flash official roms (or parts like recovery) for your model/carrier, which are digitally signed by Motorola. Attempts to flash anything else, will fail.

As for unlocking the bootloader, and/or rooting.. see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...w-root-moto-x-confusion-t2826159/post54671918
Why would you want to unlocked the bootload? So you could flash either a totally custom rom, or a rom meant for another carrier/model 2013 X which might be newer. (like some ATT XT1058 users like to flash Rogers XT1058 rom to get rid of the ATT bloat).
I really know nothing about the "ACG Regional Carriers" variant of the Moto X. I'm not sure if it might be the same hardware as another variant, only with a different ROM flashed on it. So I don't know if its safe to flash another carrier's ROM on it. But with an unlocked bootloader, you can try 3rd party roms like CM11 or CM12.
Unlock the BL and flash custom ROMs
You may want to edit your post and remove your imei number. It can be hijacked and leave you with a non functioning device. (no calls or texts or data anyway.)

Having issue with 4.2.2 JB. update need help

Just got my Moto x Verizon branded and came with 4.2.2 JB. For some reason when I hit the update it says I'm on the latest firmware. Any idea what's going on here. Im currently situated in Dubai but not sure how that would have anything to do with it. Any help?

yes, update moto update services via playstore. I dont own a vz X but I suggest you check your bootloder unlock option if interested before updating.
Yes root and unlock it now, because 4.4.4 root isn't quite ideal yet.

Did you buy it used? If yes, then its possible that the previous owner rooted and disabled the OTA update check. Especially if this is NOT a Developer Edition for Verizon.
Now, if it was purchased new, or the original owner didn't disable the OTA update check, then its likely because you are not on Verizon's network. I've seen this happen on my BB Z10, galaxy S4 and S5, and my Moto X, when running wth my t-mobile sims or on wifi. They will always say either no update found (90% of the time), or Update service not available (10% of the time). I must put my Verizon SIM in to download the update.
Since both the Developer and Non-Developer XT1060 for Verizon use the same ROMs you can download and manually flash the SFB/FXZ files from Moto Directly... -> HERE If you have the Non-Developer XT1060 and you want to unlock the bootloader, do NOT flash anything newer than 4.4.2!!
Use the link in my signature about the Risks of Downgrading to confirm your phone's bootloader version to get a better understanding of your phone's state.
IF you want to root and disable write protection going forward, you need to unlock the bootloader, and you do NOT have the developer edition for Verizon, the only option for that would be to use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader BEFORE you upgrade it to 4.4.4 or higher. For more... see HERE

I got it brand new sealed box cost approx $122 16GB, so no chance of it being rooted. I'm glad that it's still JB, read that part of 4.4.4 being not unlockable at the moment. So I just made the payment for Sunshine now waiting for either of the devs to wake up and send me those sweet digits to unlock. The phone came with a Verizon sim card in it but I get a message saying its unrecognizable but that's okay It's customs roms all the way for me from here.

Moto e5 Supra (cricket wireless)/Moto E5 Plus? Same? options?

Greetings, I just picked up the Moto e5 Supra (cricket wireless). Gotta say the 5,000mah battery is awesome and the waterproofing is a nice feature. After not having an android since Note 2 I decided to move back from Apple after my iPhone 6s Plus had issues with the digitizer board flexing. Found this beauty of a phone for a great deal at a local Cricket store for $150..
I guess i have a few questions about this phone and rooting. To start can anyone confirm that this is the same as the Moto E5 Plus? Below is my phones info. Basically looking for confirmation. Also any other info on this phone and rooting/ROMS would be appreciated. it's been a while since i last had my Note 2.

According to this, it is in fact the e5 Plus with a different name.
I have the Boost Mobile (Sprint) E5 Plus XT1924-8 and it's the same specs. I was able to unlock the bootloader and root via the instructions on the E5 forum, just have to make sure to make a backup in TWRP.
Please help me unlock my bootloader. I have the cricket wireless varient. Says its ineligible to be unlocked. XT1924-6
It can't be done if it's from Cricket
any updates on this?
I just found this in my developer options for me e5 supra... this means I shpuld be good to go right?

I am actually getting ready to start the root process myself I do remember about Motos was that the carrier didn't matter because Motorola comes unlocked . the carrier can hide that from you but the unlock process was actually on the Motorola website if you go to motorola.com or.net or whatever it is all the instructions you need are there to unlock the bootloader mode which by the way he happens to be the hardest part of the whole process all of its easy . I don't mind helping out where I can mix anyone needs it but TBH I'm not nearly as experienced as most these guys

try the lolinet website for moto E5 Plus (hannah) if your on cricket. flash the factory firmware and it has to be a build equivalent to whats currently flashed or newer.
