Those are from 2 years ago IVe had rooted phones since then.
What I'm saying is if they said that back then why was I able to get root on other phones?
Root <> unlocked bootloader....
That being said, no one knows if it will get root or not. It depends if a suitable exploit is discovered to do it. 5.1.1 plugs a few of the known exploits, so it won't happen the exact same way it did in the S6.
Only time will tell.
Also keep in mind that root can mean different things too... Permanent, temporary, root but with no system modification, etc... No one knows which we will get, if any.
keep in mind that most of the talented Devs have abandoned Samsung, so that might make it even worse
Doesn't the Note 5 have the same hardware as the S6/S6E? Seems like it should be able to be done like those phones but I don't know if that's true or not.
I'm thinking about getting this phone, but will hold off until proven root on AT&T.

I'm new so I can't post links but the first one is on a website called Android geeks and I found it after searching att s6 edge root. The other one is on a website called tech chomps. Hopefully they can be found...
Found some website claiming to have hacked kernels capable of root in my annual scouring of the web praying that I can regain control of my phone...should I have hope in this?
Just thought id share my finding here, for anyone passing by please exercise caution when browsing these sites, I know nothing about them and just found them. I am hoping someone on here can drop in about the legitimacy of these sites before I test them.
I haven't heard of those but am doubtful there is root unless it's for devices that are on old software. I just got an s6 edge thats on 6.0.1, no root.
If you want root, don't buy ATT devices. Most T-Mobile devices work on ATT network (with LTE and all), and have unlocked bootloaders allowing root. That is my understanding at least and my experience with the Note 4.

To be honest, I don't know, but I would say odds are better that you wont get root than that you will.
Wanting to get the phone and see how the US versions(snapdragon)of the S8+ are starting to get root. Wondering if many of you think this trend will follow with the Note 8 Snapdragon versions?
I say just sit back and wait.
Yes, it has been said the snapdragon will get root with a possible of 80% limit on the battery just like the s8.

The Note 8 US models will get root. Just be patient the phone just came out on the 15th. I have had multiple phones with locked bootloaders and every time some hard working people find a way to root them. This phone will have root soon.

Yes twrp and root already available for exynos versions...always within the first week of launch it seems.
Snapdragons....who knows lol. Will likely get some form of root with certain issues as usual. Will never get twrp.
Dont waste your money on snapdragon if development matters to you.

Determined individuals will find a way, but it'll take quite some time and rely on security exploits that could just as easily be used for nefarious purposes, so don't be surprised if they get patched out in future updates.
Meanwhile, you could just get a device with an unlocked bootloader and be on your merry way, but that only applies to Exynos variants and maybe the Snapdragon variant sold in Hong Kong. Needless to say, that makes things a pain for North American buyers for a litany of reasons - doubly so if you're on Sprint or Verizon due to lack of CDMA support on Exynos.

This is all true. There really isn't a reason to root the Snapdragon variant unless you absolutely need it for an app that requires root. You can't run any custom ROMs on a phone with a locked bootloader, even if it is rooted.
Just like with the S7/Edge Snapdragons, they had root but it was so unreliable I could never really keep my phone rooted. There were severe battery drain issues, lag and more and these issues remain today for people still trying to root that phone.
I still have my old reliable Note 5 rooted and I still it today even though I have a Note 8 now.
Does anyone know if rooting the note8 will trigger Knox?

This. Sure snapdragons will get root but it won't be for months and it will limit battery to 80%. Plus no twrp or custom roms. Not worth it imho. That's why if root and roms are important to you, Exynos is your only real option.
Attention samsung we know you spy on us here on xda. We have a major complaint and wish for you to allow our devices to have it's bootloader unlocked. I have checked your company's code in sboot.bin and it has this code in it: "get_oem_unlock_val" and theres hidden jpg files in param.bin (you can open the file as an archive in 7 zip) It has a file named unlock_L.jpg which will show an unlock icon and the word custom. Why would you waste time putting this in the bootloader if you wasn't intending to let us (your customers) use it. We demand an update to allow us to unlock the bootloader. We will not set here and watch our rights as consumers to use our device as we choose be thrown out the window. There's a reason us android fans hate IOS and iphones and that is because it is all proprietary bull crap and we want freedom. Update: Samsung has not responded to our demands. and they have decided to randomly stop making the android oreo update. I was told by samsung themselves that the j3 prime from metropcs and tmobile will get android oreo. I feel lied to. I refuse to let my efforts of over a year trying to get root go out the window.

The simple fact is, people wanting root or an unlocked bootloader are a minority as far as Samsung are concerned.
The majority of people who use bootloader locked devices are unaware of what root even is or a locked bootloader.
Unfortunately those who require Admin access to their devices are insignificant in the big picture.

You do have a good point. I am guessing samsung is just looking at the needs of the many vs the needs of the few but at this point this is our only option unless someone finds an exploit which could take a year or more to find. If i could get a bootloader unlocked device lg is the way to go but it will be years before i get a new device.

I found a solution to our locked bootloader issue. it will require ordering from samsungs website. The model of the unlocked variant of the j3 prime is: SM-J327U it is has oem unlock in developer options, it is unlocked for all carriers, and the bootloader is unlocked completely. looks like twrp can be built for this device. and also i confirm that the device is rooted with the j327t cf autoroot. another guy in another thread has stated he has root.

Also you cannot void warranty for rooting or flashing custom firmware according to an article i read made in 2016. On behalf of the community we demand our bootloaders to be able to be unlocked. We are getting sick of relying on exploits which can be really bad to use as hackers use it to get control of our phones. All phones from 2017 onward need to be unlocked regardless of carrier. We do not live in north korea so stop treating us like we are slaves!!!

Not trying to defend anyone, but Samsung has it's reasons for this. They are trying to protect subsidy. So say for example Samsung makes different 737 models to different carriers such as T-mobile or ATT. T-mobile or ATT want the customers to be using their plan. If the phone's could be unlocked, you could simply buy the cheapest model and use it for any carrier. As for unlocking the bootloader or rooting, any android phone with Android 7.0 or higher is difficult to root. All the one click root methods i've tried such as Kingroot for multiple different phones such as Samsung, ZTE, LG.. all failed. All we can do is wait for a master hacker to find a work around.

Well that would require all cell phone companies to program the device for their market when it is shipped to the company which is inefficient. Cell phone companies request a device catered to how their network works. If you have verizon and you try to get a phone with a GSM radio to work on it you will be wasting time because it wont work. Maybe if all companies switch to cdma or gsm it will be practical to make one model for all carriers.

You mentioned you wanted to know because you were coming from T-Mobile, and you wanted to know about the Verizon version. I was explaining they are the same exact device.

This question has been answered several times already in this forum. There is a 99.99% chance we will never see an unlocked bootloader on the Snapdragon version of the Note 9, or the Note 8, or the S9/+, or the S8/+, or basically ANY Samsung Snapdragon device. There's also a very, VERY high chance you'll never see root. The last person who rooted a Snapdragon device (the Note 8) stated they closed up his hole for root, and he was basically done working on it.
If you want unlocked bootloaders and root, go with the Exynos version from over seas. Just say goodbye to carrier aggregation. And once you unlock that bootloader, say goodbye to Samsung Pay, Samsung Pass, Secure Folder, etc...
I've been considering a Note 9 to replace my recently dead Pixel XL. I bought my PXL unlocked straight from Google. I was able to unlock the bootloader from the settings, load TWRP, then flash SU.
Samsung doesn't offer the option to unlock the bootloader if you buy the phone (US version) straight from them?

Not only is there no way to KEEP it. There's no way to get it back. When you unlock the bootloader, you break Knox. That is a PERMANENT thing. It blows an E-Fuse, so you cannot reverse no matter what you try. And without Knox, you don't have Secure Folder.

I haven't upgraded since the Note 3 where I can get root without tripping Knox, block OS updates, and get root back any tine I want to. That it why I killed the Note 3's ability to update the OS, and why I didn't get the Note 4, 5, 6, and now am checking in on 8 and 9 to see where things are today. Now they are taking away the ability to record our own phone calls with "P", so I'm checking out where root is today before I upgrade. These capabilities we use for invoicing our time and business automation is a major reason for choosing Android. If Android is attempting to be like the iPhone, then we might as well buy iPhones. I'm not interested in only Google and the NSA having access to my conversations. I know some Android vendors are going around Google/Android and building it into the hardware, but that limits me to their phones.

Nope, you cannot cross firmwares. Your phone is also bootloader locked with no way to unlock it. There's no root method yet either and probably won't be. I have the G975U (U.S. Galaxy S10+), so I am in the same boat as far as root and bootloader goes.

I should of checked the model number to see what was available for it before i bought it but i guess i will have to deal unless by chance something is done about it which won't happen as everybody is gonna work on the s20 now. I wish phones were more like computers in which you can use whatever the hell you want on them, idk why carriers have such a issue with it since people will still pay for their services all the same.

The S9 just got root like a month or 2 ago. The S10 and up have greater security measures to overcome, which has been a dead end to people trying to find a root method.
Carriers argue that root "takes away from the user experience." What that means to me is they don't want people who know nothing about how these phones work poking around and messing crap up and then returning the phone or claiming insurance or warranty or whatever. Some phones can be bootloader unlocked via the manufacturer like HTC (they used to offer OEM bootloader unlocks, they may have stopped I don't know). I think the One Plus phones come rooted (not sure though) and I believe the Pixel phone line are easily rooted (again not sure, so don't quote me).

My first smartphone was a HTC One Vx i do believe and that was where i learned to root phones on, then i had a galaxy s6 which i rooted aswell, then a LG Stylo 3 but LG doesn't seem to be friendly to rooting either. I was thinking of getting a HTC u12 instead of the s10 but went with the s10 cause of price, now i wish i would of just got the htc u12, i think htc's are comparable to galaxy's myself, but galaxies are more mainstram choice cause of high quality materials.

Yeah only the exynos variants can be rooted with the exception of the Hong Kong variant which has a snapdragon and can be rooted. The Sprint 5G version can also be rooted. That link you posted is probably BS given nobody here in the forums in talking about it. It could be real though, but as far as I know the OEM unlock option is either not present on the G973U or is present and just does nothing when activated. Someone else with more knowledge of it might chime in, hopefully they do because now I am curious.

I wish phones were more like computers in which you can use whatever the hell you want on them, idk why carriers have such a issue with it since people will still pay for their services all the same.
