Do custom roms support Moto Display? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
Do custom roms support Moto Display / active lockscreen? I mean this:

Also, is battery life better or worse on custom rom, f. i. CyanogenMod?
Cheers!

I would like to know this too

Custom roms do not support Active Display.

Can't you guys just read existing threads.
Custom ROM = google now = NO moto voice, which means no custom launch phrase, no advanced commands (such as "what's up" to read notifications aloud) and, most important. no voice activation with screen off (even worse if you don't live in an English-speaking country, thanks google for crippling android this much)
Custom ROM = Ambient Display = NO moto display. What's the difference? The latter uses less energy, it's more convenient to use (information is streamlined rather than being a b/w lockscreen which lights up way too easily) and it acts as a notification led (it will blink until notifications are read or cleared)
Clear enough?

Do you guys think before posting?

My bad

Custom ROMs do not have any of the Moto baked-in features, but often have similar equivalents,
On 7.1 CM14 using the build.prop tweak to get the Google Assistant, you can use "OK Google" from any screen
On any version of CyanogenMod 5.0+, you can have a moto display-alike feature using wave to wake in Android's Ambient Display feature
Installing Android Auto from the Play Store gives you a better experience than Moto Actions's driving mode. It is a dedicated driving screen with easy shortcuts to music and maps. This can be set to auto-launch when you connect to a specific bluetooth device as well. Combine this with the Pixel build.prop tweak and you have a good driving interface.
Do not Disturb hours based on calendar events and set times is available in CyanogenMod (at least 7.1, maybe lower versions too) under the Do Not Disturb setting in the settings app.
Chop Chop for flashlight and Twist for camera are also available on CM 6.0+ in the Gestures section of the settings and can be tied to any camera app.

I thought of making a new thread because although I found a lot of threads asking similar questions, I didn't find answers that were as in-depth or complete as I'd like. So I'll just hijack this one since it seems somewhat active
I get it that none of the Moto features are available on Custom ROMs, I mean that's what you'd expect from a custom ROM, that it doesn't contain any of the vendor stuff. I also know that there are alternatives to (most?) of them out there. (I think I'd like to compile a comprehensive list at some point, since information seems rather scattered).
What I don't know and am curious about is:
- Why can't we just get (sideload) them on any ROM?
- Do these alternatives make use of the special sensors / auxiliary processors in the X-something (whatever Motorola called their fancy chip+extra sauce package) - ie do they work properly and/or drain the battery?
My reasoning behind these questions (why I'm genuinely curious) is: I thought Motorola released the sources for this device - so we should be able to make the "sensors and stuff" work; and then it ought to be just a matter of stealing the APKs from somewhere / making that work with the alternative solutions.
So is it actually not possible or has just noone spent the effort to make it work (is it difficult / a lot of work?)
Thanks for your insights

I appreciate the way you wrote this, but there are a couple of substantial differences I mentioned earlier. Not to be an.al, but I think these are pretty significant to the user experience.
First of all, android's ambient display is tied to the system lockscreen and it's much more prone to accidental unlocking; it will also stop blinking after a couple minutes or less, so it's not a real substitute for a notification LED.
Moto Voice is simply irreplaceable. It's much more reliable than google assistant, it's got more useful features and it doesn't greet you with a stupid wannabe-human robotic phrase.
The headache of making Assistant "work" (sort of, because it will never have the efficiency of Moto Voice) is honestly not worth it.
And, sorry sir, but "from any screen", assuming you can get it working in the first place (thanks google for making android fragmentation worse!), doesn't mean "with screen off, locked, unplugged". It's not a minor difference for someone who bought a moto x for its features!

Thank you for your interest, but it's still half-baked.
I'm staying with what I think is the best setup for keeping this device up to date without losing features.
Stock 6.0 firmware, krait kernel and xposed with N-ify are cutting it for me and I'd recommend it to anyone
Downsides? Only one, but it's not minor by any means: security updates :c
Still stuck at May 2016

yeah you're right i know that...i miss moto display & moto voice pretty bad but you still get the chop chop and twist gesture on cm or cm based roms, anyways so i was trying a way to make it work but you saw that post right, it is possible but you'll be needing a system dump all those frameworks and stuffs and then the source code of cm or cm based roms and coding etc so its kinda time consuming i guess and so i wanted someone who knows more than me or an expert
so yeah i do miss it but if you try custom roms or for example RR rom on your beloved victara then you get a ton of features and some tricks to make it look cool & stuffs then probably you wouldn't want to go back to stock just try it once and also you get security updates plus you get every android updates as well as new features
and i've been using GA on my victara running RR rom with some cool tricks like i said and trust me it does feels really good
you might wanna check on this thread too incase if you wanted to try or wondered

[ROM(attemtp)][CM10/MIUI]CM1+MIUI+PHONEmode mashup[so far failed builds]

Hi,
INTRO
I run MIUI on my phone and have since i discovered it. I am really fond of the EOL GB MIUI builds. I think the interface is great. Clean and smooth.
Searching around the web I came across [ROM][ICS] MIUI for Galaxy Tab 10.1 - P75xx - 20120825, I had previously seen a post on [GUIDE] How to port MIUI v4 to your Device
I really like the idea of using Button Savior or similar, combined with the miui style notification toggles.
Mockups from my phone;

I have already tried CM7/9/10 on my Defy, along with other roms, and already had a go at CM10 on my GN10. Well, that gives me the thought, I might try to build up a rom for GN10
ATTEMPT
So I grabed the unofficial CM10 from here on xda, maguro MIUI-2.8.31 (Galaxy Nexus GSM JB) from miuiandroid.com and the build script mentioned above.
After reading the build script for the ICS MIUI for the GT10 and the GUIDE (both above) I didnt hold high hopes, but I had a go.
The script, of course fails, but builds a rom that gets to the bootspash, and I had a manual go at building my mashing the two together and never got past the samsung boot logo.
I ran logcat over adb while booting and it gets stuck due to something to do with the audio and probably many other reasons.
REASONS
The reason why I think this is a good Idea;
I am not keen on the Android tablet style notfication/nav bar, esp since there is no nice way to auto hide it. The MIUI style phone notification bar can be exposed even when there is a full screen app by swiping down from the top.
I really like the no apps drawer way that mihome works. New apps appear right there, and can be uninstalled in the same way shortcuts are removed in most other launchers, by dragging to the top. The MIUI implementation seems much nicer than on iphone. ( I understand that MiHome does not do landscape and even if this mashup workes on our GN10 devices I will still prob use nova launcher to get rotating home). I am not saying MiHome is perfect by any means. It has no way of making customized app shortcuts without 3rd party app and then they seem to be pretty flakey at actually displaying the shortcut on the launcher. For making url shortcuts ShortcutLink works very well.
The toggles in MIUI are great, and when there is more than fit on the screen they can be swiped left and right to reveal more. The MIUI GB notfications area is super clean, With the ES mod (swipe away like ICS/JB) why do we need to be told a notification is ongoing, if you can't swipe it away it is ongoing. Also the MIUI toggles jump directly to the settings when long pressed and toggle when clicked, this is top functionality.
Now, I am not specifically wanting actual miui, but I know of no other way to get something so similar and get the same functionality.
PROBLEM
The problem I have is my lack of abiltiy/knowlege in programing. I did sucessfully install the Android envoironment and eclipse on both my linux (crunchban/debiantesting x64) box at the office and my Win7x64 box at home, but as far as actually knowing what I am doing, I could barely manage to complete some of the basic howto's that are basically copy/paste due to the ide changing slightly from the tutorials. :crying:
I am quite proficient at linux and writing bash scripts etc, have a bit of php/database understanding etc, but it is not enough.
I also understand that CM10 is pretty bleeding edge on our devices and doesnt really provide a stable base yet, but it is pretty good and I am sure will get enough love to become rock solid/everything working in the not too distant future due to the great work by the dev's
SOLUTION
Due to my lack of programing skills the only way I think that this ROM/project/idea can move forward is for a dev to be fond of the idea, and/or enough people to like the idea that a deve thinks it is worthwile.
I can only sweeten such an idea with assistance in providing multi GB of webspace (with php/mysql/pgsql/tomcat/whatever), multi TB of download data, email services. I can provide only moderate ammounds of donated funds. I am sure that I can manage doco and support assistance.
END
Well, I am not sure anyone would like my idea, I am very open to comments and thoughts in the matter. Please refrain from flame wars on particular platforms or rom styles. It is more taking the best ideas from all places and implementing them into something great.
Thanks for reading.
RESERVED, in case some action actually happens
very glad to see some dev attempts. I dont know much about your chanses to pull this of. But i wish you the best of luck. Welcome
Ok, after searching around and trying this out I have not really made any progress. I think one way of getting a more phone style UI on my GNote10 is to have a go at actually compiling
PARANOID android, as there is some nice instructions over at this thread, and progress is happining on the GTab10.1, so there is already work on a comparable screen to leverage off of.
At lease this will get me into setting up a decent environment and see how it goes, my pc is plenty fast enough, just need to chuck another drive in and ubuntu as per the guide, which is no trouble.
Well, anyways, thanks for looking.
There is a PA release for the Note 10.1. But you have probably already seen that.

CHANGELOG:

Since we're updating frequently, making manual changelogs ain't possible anymore...
And also take note that although I am involved in the development of this ROM, but I do not own the device, so I might not be able to answer your device specific questions...
You might want to move this to the other Dev forum (Atrix HD Android Development) for our device. You'll see more traffic there.

See this article for a description of whether a post should be in "Original" Development or not: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/introducing-original-development-forums-for-more-devices/
Regardless, it seems like all the ROMs are in the other forum anyway.
Hi, which are the Unique Power Saving Functions? Is just one on/off switch or does it have more settings? I will be trying this ROM this week, but just wanted to know...
Edit: Just installed it and is just a on/off switch. What does it does? Also I noticed a bug in lockscreen, when you lock it, it still shows the navigation bar. Buttons doesn't do anything but they are there. Also there is some chinese apps.
Other than that, is pretty similar to another CM based ROMs. If the battery saving feature really works, this will be my daily driver without a doubt.

Yes, it looks like vanilla Android, but have you explored the features? Not all ROMs have those......and it's not ported but compiled from source, I've posted lots of similar threads...of course I've read the rules, thanks for reminding though...
I've started posting threads across the forums to spread the work of the team, not for "Thanks" hunting...why so negative without further testing on the project we spent countless on? Nightly builds, OTA updates and download server, we wouldn't spend so much effort if it is just a rip off and isn't something to be proud of...

Well the ROM is from China right? The apps were targeted at the users over there...just go to Settings->Apps and disable them...the power saver? Try tapping on the left of the toggle......well about looking the same, there are actually a lot of things not implemented by others, including CM...I will spend some time on explaining this time then:
1. Incremental updates: Remember Cyandelta? Well we have incremental updates by default, each update is around 15++MB
2. Speed dialing in dialer
3. Upload+download speeds in status bar
4. Lift phone to call
5. Delay SMS sending
6. Auto stop timer in Apollo
And lots more...not all are described in the first post and screenshots...

Well I installed, seem'd interesting, lots of features to play with. But in less than 15min use, I already had 3% signal loss, which means it has the same radio crashing as CM11. Which seems a shame, would have like to use it more, but can't count on it as my daily driver.

It's not your rom's fault. Unfortunately it is a CM11 problem and is the same with all roms based CM11.
EDIT: Not seeing the option for multi-windows NVM found it works great!

The rom's pretty great, but I'm getting a Status 7 error in CWM when I try and flash the incremental update from 1/18 to 1/24.. I'm using a compatible version of CWM, and have flashed before the CM11 nightlies and other CM11 based roms (including this one) with no problem.

That's actually the recovery I'm currently using.

[ROM][CAF/AOSP][5.1] CAF-victara / Nexus X

Code:
Your warranty is now void.
Flashing this rom assumes you have a sufficient technical understanding of
your device. Before continuing, you should be aware of the risks involved
and have an idea of what to do if something goes wrong. I am not responsible
for any bricked or otherwise malfunctioning devices.
CAF-victara
The Android for MSM project on the Code Aurora Forum (CAF) is a branch of Android optimized for Qualcomm devices. I decided to take it upon myself to provide a baseline source tree for the 2nd generation Moto X, allowing developers and enthusiasts alike to build their custom roms with a fresh start, rather than digging through the divergent sources of CM or others.
CAF-victara uses the CyanogenMod kernel, and a modified version of the CyanogenMod device tree. The rest of the source trees are either pure CAF or AOSP, with a few bugfixes here and there.

Nexus X
The 2nd generation Moto X is widely considered to be the younger sibling of the Nexus 6. In fact, in China, the Nexus 6 was rebranded as the Moto X Pro.
I've always been a huge fan of the Nexus line, and the pure Android experience that the Nexus devices have provided. So I set out to bring that Nexus experience (that name was already taken ) to my own device, effectively converting my Moto X into a Nexus X.
The Nexus X packages are flashable zips that convert the CAF-victara ROM into a Nexus-like experience. Not only will it install Google Apps, but it will also remove the source-built apps from the ROM, and replace the boot animation with the Nexus molecule animation.

Please bare with me as I have very little time to work on projects outside of work. I will get around to it though. Keep the reports coming!
To Do:
Set SELinux to Enforcing, currently permissive
Convert CM ambient display to a flashable module
Known Issues:
Installation of the Nexus-X packages will fail if the /system partition is already mounted.
Encryption seems to cause some issues
Restore settings failures
GPS icon weirdness, GPS isn't actually on
Some WiFi signal loss reported, but I cannot reproduce
You tell me
Done but not released:
Update to 5.1.1 (CAF LA.BF.1.1.1-03210-8x74.0)
Lockscreen icon always displaying as locked
Looks like a winner ?

No it doesn't. I'd like to keep the build itself as pure as possible, however I can probably extract the CM implementation into its own separate module for those who want it. I'll see what I can do.
Very cool, def. Respect that! Gonna give it a try anyways, if you could add that as an add on though, that would be great !
2 bugs I've noticed -
Location is a bit wonky, gps works but the location notification in the status bar tends to stick around abnormally long after it locks location, not sure if it's actively seeking it the whole time or if it just gets stuck there
Wifi Tethering causes an error, I read on the post for the Nexus Experience ROM that flashing the 4/19 CM nightly then dirty flashing another rom fixes but haven't tried it, i presume they added a fix in that build.
Other then that, running great!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll take a look at the tethering problem first. I'm pretty sure the location icon just gets stuck, CAF had some pretty strange bugs with the status bar icons.

I've been using Hangouts so I didn't even notice, but I tried Messenger and experienced the same thing. I'll take a look at it tomorrow.
Wireless tethering and SMS from Messenger have been fixed. The new build is uploading but it will take a while. Thanks for testing.
Thanks for the hard work! This seems like a great ROM. I installed it today, but had to revert back to CM 12.1 for a couple of issues.
Restore settings sees my last back-up, but failed to restore.
On the lockscreen, the lock icon at the bottom (between phone and camera shortcuts) is always showing as locked, even though I don't have a lock set.
GPS notification stayed for over an hour after a fix was achieved.
Kept losing Wifi connectivity, LTE on T-Mobile was awesome though.
Keep up the good work, will try again on your next build.

Does the GPS work without any issue? On CM12.1 for some users (me included) it doesn't works...

It's been working for me without any issues, other than the icon getting stuck in the status bar. No one else has complained about it thus far.

GPS has been working perfectly fine for me, and I'm not sure how to break it. I know there was an issue in CM12 with GPS that was solved by getting a lock while running stock, and then flashing whatever rom. GPS data is stored on the /persist partition and won't get wiped doing a factory reset.
So, if I flash the ROM after setting the GPS to High Accuracy it should work without any issue, right?

What works:
WiFi
Calls
Microphone
Vibrations
Dual SIM
Sound
Fingerprint scanner
Camera + Flashlight
Notification LED
Probably even more, just haven't tested everything yet.
What doesn't work/Bugs:
Brightness is always 100% (Someone contact OP and tell them to change vendor or kernel stuff to work with different amount of brightness levels)
Stock keyboard shows some Chinese popup and it's difficult to type on it so just install Gboard instead.
USB MTP seems kinda buggy. (Might be because of my unstable linux, OOS sometimes doesn't work either so not sure if You'll get this bug too)
NFC is constantly turning on and off.
If anyone wants, You can change brightness with terminal command that You can find in my Pixel 3XL Port Thread.
How to Install:
Flash Stock OOS Oreo in TWRP (preferably twice)
Boot into fastboot and use my rom flasher. It will do everything automatically. (Just run bat file and that's it!)
Boot into TWRP (Yes, You need TWRP that works with Oreo so go to twrp.me and get 3.2.2.0 version)
Mount Vendor
Flash Patch1 in TWRP (Don't flash Patch2, I accidentally added it to the zip, just leave it alone.)
### OPTIONAL ###
Flash Magisk
Flash OpenGapps
#############
Done! Reboot and enjoy!
Also, during setup, use Your sim card internet to go through setup. Once the phone boots look in the left upper corner for "English" tap on it and have fun!

Nope. It's ZUI. Lenovo's own rom that looks kinda similar to MIUI.
I will publish more ports today. Early Christmas!

I'd really appreciate if you manage to get the Pixel 3 bugs fixed
I don't mind you posting so many ports(I encourage it)
But I guess you should also try to solve issues
Just a humble suggestion
Would really love to use the Pixel 3XL port

Well.. One bug has to be fixed by OnePlus. Brightness.. Only OP6 uses 1023 levels of brightness and that's why this bug exists in all sGSI roms. If they could release OTA with modded brightness levels to match other devices, it would be a lot better. Otherwise I'll have to try modding framework (yes, it's finally possible) but it's very difficult. I'm not a big fan of smali.. (Just google smali and You'll know what I mean)
Edit: I'm also focusing on Pixel 3 XL Port less because You can have almost 1:1 Pixel 3 XL rom with Havoc OS for example. And everything works there.
brightness at max all the time? i think i will pass for now.
but great job porting this, looking forward to more of your ports <3

Hmm. Here WiFi and Sound works fine.. did You use 5.1.11 firmware? I already noticed that OP6 is a pretty complicated phone. It's like every OP6 has different bugs . On my phone the only bugs that I have are NFC is restarting all the time, Camera Dual Mode doesn't work, Brightness is 100% and stock keyboard requires long presses to type on it.

Nfc, Brightness, camera bug is similar what u experienced, and i flashed 5.1.11 twice before porting, but screen not responsive while charging and while its not charging it goes deep sleep
but i like this rom more.. u take ur own time to make this rom stable:good:
Issues experienced so far (including known);
- NFC service keeps rebooting(? dropdown icon flickering)
- Brightness slider not working, automatic brightness keeps re-enabling itself
- Night light not working
- Can't change any color tone
- Occasionally, unlocking the phone will keep the fingerprint icon centered after unlocking, preventing the phone from locking at all.
I tried disabling the NFC service entirely, by blocking com.android.nfc and disabling the service via
Code:
svc nfc disable
This didn't solve it sadly. Since you're not the developer, idk how much bugfixing you're doing, but the rom as is looks really promising.
Just doesn't cut it just yet as daily driver (IMO)
Really looking forward to your MIUI port!

I think I know how to fix NFC but since it's not my rom.. I'm not sure if I can work on it. I'm pretty much just sharing it here. I just converted it to A/B and made sure that kernel will boot it etc.
If someone can send me stock Lenovo Z5 firmware. I can turn it into a sGSI and work on fixing bugs.
And Brightness bug will be always there anyway. Unless OnePlus will change amount of Brightness levels in their firmware.
can u port funtouch os pie?

I remember using this on my old Sony devices.
A new ROM is always welcome. I used it well on my N4.

Should work, but it's recommended to flash stock first. But you can do that in one flash. So when you're in TWRP, flash the stock zip, and flash Carbon right afterwards without a reboot or anything.

We do not actively workaround SafetyNet due to various reasons. LineageOS has a well written explanation here.
If you want SafetyNet I recommend checking out solutions like Magisk or various custom kernels with "SafetyNet patches".
I can confirm Safetynet passing when you use MagiskHide Props config module:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-magiskhide-props-config-t3789228
You gotta change the fingerprint with props -f command
I installed this ROM today, first I tried LineageOs bit I got force close message with opengapps. With this ROM everything is fine and I just setup everything with no problems or glitches as of yet. So it looks great to me. Wil report back later
Everything is great so far. The stand by drain is also good 4% overnight.
One issue is that Network Traffic Indicator is not working, it's there but display 0.00kb/s
It would be great if the rom allow display calibration like DCI-P3 and vibration motor adjustment

Thank you
I have been using it now for a couple of days. A few things I have noticed:
- The Mobile/data icon constantly keeps switching between LTE/LTE+. I tried changing the icon to 4G but then it keeps flipping between 4G/4G+. Also the signal icon is never full. For example in my room on the top floor I always had full signal bar with OOS
- Battery drain seems to go a little faster then OOS, any tips to improve this?
- I tried paying with my phone/bank app/nfc chip at local supermarket and it did not work.. It worked on OOS/magisk/usb debug disabled..
Is there a change to get OOS camera or anyone have a good working google camera app?

LTE+ and LTE are different modes. LTE+ means "LTE Advanced" which allows for carrier aggregation (see Wikipedia). I believe OxygenOS is not showing the + by default (Android allows to configure that internally). As for stength, it might be worth checking the actual db values as theres a few carrier know for cheating at the shown signal strength. Those cheats are "disabled" in AOSP.
Battery: So far reports all deliver an improvement or even experience with Oxygen. It might take a few cycles to "settle in".
Paying: The miracles of SafetyNet. I'm not familiar with the whole Google Pay stuff so I can't help you there unfortunately.
There are a few OxygenOS camera APKs you can install that work fine. Also all @Arnova8G2 GCam builds are fine.
I knew LTE/LTE+ are 2 different modes. But your story doenst explain why it keeps flipping from LTE to LTE+. Everywhere I am, walking trough the city, in the park, near the train station or at home it keeps switching from LTE to LTE+. Every 2 to about 10 seconds or so. This results in constantly moving icons in the top status bar which is pretty annoying. Also it doesn't make sense it would switch between the different modes so much right?
How do I check the db values and what are db values?
I've been using the first Pax build (STABLE) and just updated! Great battery! (I swapped kernel cause ViPER4Android)
There was a conflict with ViPER BT (not processing after about 5 seconds) however, kernel in 5/6 may yield stable results, we'll def find out.
kernel adjusting automatically. very stable; low load avg.
Spectacular CarbonROM, Thanks Myself5 I'll continue with the included kernel for a Carbon experience!
Amazing ROM, first time user and loving it. Thanks for such a hard work!
I'm using with MinMicroG and works like perfect, amazing battery life.
Would like to know some issue, in settings, Spoof package signature is available but I can't see, for playstore/fakestore! Why is that?
i want to try this rom. can anyone give me correct steps for installing...would be much help.??
usb file transer not working for me thanks for the rom
