What do we do after receiving the Mi Mix to make sure we have no adware/malware? - Xiaomi Mi MIX Questions & Answers

Guys,
I have read through all the threads and performed a number of searches on XDA and elsewhere and can't find a thread dedicated to how we can minimize the risk of malware installed on Chinese OEM smartphones. It seems that, barring some hardware nastiness, that the only way to be sure you don't have malware/crapware on these devices is to root, TWRP and load a trusted open source ROM. But from my read of the Mi Mix threads and given the limited release of the Mi Mix, most of us are running either the China/EU stable or CN Dev or the "multi language" ROM some vendors are installing prior to shipping from China/HK.
So are there best practices that others have implemented to make sure the Mi Mix is as secure as possible?
I'm expecting my Mi Mix on Tuesday and I'm trying too make sure I everything set up for optimizing it for use in the US
Thanks!

install twrp (based on your firmware), flash SuperSU via twrp and install adway apk (google xda adway).

Cannot use Android Pay

Is android pay working for anyone else?
When I try to add a credit card, it says
Android Pay can't be used on this device
This may be because your device is rooted, has an unlocked bootloader, or is running a custom ROM. As a result, Google can't confirm that your device meets Android Pay's security standards.
I just got phone today and haven't done anything to the device as far as the FW or root.
It's on MIUI Global 8.0 Stable 8.0.8.0.0
Thanks for any help provided.
Happy Holidays.
You have a vendor rom.
Theres no global rom for the mix, only China Stable, Dev and an unofficial eu.
It looks like it's MAHCNDI which I think I can get an update for here. But I understand what you mean by the vendor rom.
http://en.miui.com/download-317.html
Does anyone else have any problems w/ android pay on the normal EU ROM?
Under the default wallet in settings, it shows Mi Wallet or Use HCE Wallet.
and Tap & Pay, the payment default is Android Pay but no other options.
Anyone else have any issues?
I'm using EU rom (6.12.8) now. When I tried to use Android Pay, the app said that it cannot be activated on this device because it seems to be "rooted, bootloader unlocked and/or using custom ROM".
Changing default wallet in settings doesn't make any differences.

What do you mean by a Vendor ROM? It literally says MIUI global, there isn't any Chinese bloatware, and it automatically has the play store installed.
I am using China Stable and Android Pay is reporting the same message.
Same on miui global 8.2
The only way is to install custom ROM with Magisk hide and Xiaomi Fix

Mi Mix ROM clarification

I have been extremely confused on what the available ROMs are for this device. I usually am not this cautious, but the sheer rarity of this phone always makes me think twice with what I do with it.
So after reading around a bit, to my understanding these are the available ROMs:
Chinese Stable
Chinese Developer
EU unofficial global (on MIUI 6.x.x??!)
Vendor ROM
What I don't understand is that listed for me is "MIUI Global 8.0 | Stable 8.0.7.0.0 (MAHCNDI)". No Chinese bloatware, English is set by default, play store is automatically installed...
I want to update my phone OTA, but clearly this is broken as no updates even pop up after checking. My question is:
What rom am I running?
Of the following ROMs mentioned which one is the update to my device?
Thanks guys, I hope I haven't been the millionth person to ask.
Edit: after reading a bit more I've found others in my same situation. English is automatically selected, no bloatware, and the playstore is automatically installed. Apparently I have a vendor ROM, one that was installed by the seller/vendor. It's extremely hard to believe that this isn't an official global ROM!
So this Chinese stable rom: http://en.miui.com/thread-436070-1-1.html , would it have bloatware and the whole 9 yards of hell?
I can't update OTA because the updater is broken and I'm not trying to unlock the bootloader unless it's absolutely necessary. Am I on an abandoned ROM?
I had this rom it wasn't EU rom it is global same as you 8.0.7.0.0 I liked it cos it clean of all that bloatware that other roms have but I couldn't install xposed so I tried an EU rom and it did work the Eu rom does have some Chinese crap in it but some can be uninstall and now I have a very good looking and working rom, you got to tweak and customize it as you which and i'm happy with it.
I am in the same situation as you, I'm on 8.0.8.0.0 "Global" . It was installed by Gearbest, I can only assume. My updater can't see any other ROMS, not even when I've downloaded it either. So yes I think it's "abandoned".
I've asked for my phone to be unlocked so that I can get access to update the ROM later on from Xiaomi. It's been about 24 hours, I can only assume they're busy since lots of the phones have been delivered to customers by now.
My plan is to go onto the EU ROM unless I can get access to google apps using the Chinese ROM.
So to my understanding now, Xiaomi flashed every device that was sold internationally (ones shipped to redistributers like GearBest or Geekbuying)? And now they offer no support or legitimate way (besides unlocking the bootloader) to update... Can somebody correct me or didn't Xiaomi curse us with this beautiful device?
Interesting to hear. Maybe I'll check out the EU ROM

Need Custom ROM suggestions and Instructions for Xiaomi Mi 5

I recently received a Xiaomi Mi 5 device and am unhappy with the stock MIUI (7.2.8.0 Global Stable) functionality.
My previous phone was a Moto E (1st Gen) and several years ago, I had flashed a custom ROM by @TheStrix [from this thread].
What an amazing ROM that was. It provided an optimized version of the stock ROM that fully supported the hardware and provided a great base on which to add required Apps. I used it happily for years and my son still uses it.
I am looking for a Custom ROM for the Xiaomi Mi 5 that meets the following criteria:
1. Must be stable and supported
2. Must support all device hardware fully without losing functionality (example: IR blaster, NFC, fingerprint, 4-Axis OIS, VoLTE, ...)
3. Provide as close an experience to the standard Android OS it is based on as possible (example retain the great integration of the "OK Google" functionality)
4. As few Apps pre-installed as possible without compromising (2) and (3) above. But must include Google Play Store for a smooth way to install whatever apps (Google or otherwise) are needed later.
4. Clear instructions to install the ROM starting with a stock Mi5 device, using a Linux laptop. I am in to the "open source" movement and don't own a Windows device.
I have already spent a lot of time transferring 15 GB of my data to the device, so a way to update the new ROM without losing the data is desirable, but not a must-have.
Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions. Apologies if this thread turns out to be a duplicate.
Further information from a response I received on the MIUI forum.
My ROM version says MIUI Global 7.2.8.0.0 (MAACNDB) Stable. However official ROMs don't have "CN" in the version for Global Stable ROMs. So looks like my device came with an Unofficial ROM.
Xiaomi may only provide a windows-based unlocking tool. I do not know whether it may work correctly with Wine. Qcom 9008 mode may not work but you can still flash via fastboot, and unlocking bootloader is required.
MIUI is stable and all function should work normally but it is not a AOSP-like one. Lineageos 14.1 is stable but not all functions work - QC 3.0 seldom works, touch button does not work well enough on LGD panel. I do not know how to test OIS, but it is said to work.

In your situation, the fake rom situation, you have to first unlock the bootloader and then flash a real/official miUI rom and from there ... go where you want.
remember: DO A BACKUP if you need your personal data; because this operation, done right, will erase everything from the phone.
A good place to look for informations will be here on xda and the official miUI forum

The best custom rom for mi5, in my opinion, are the RR and the AOSCP. Fast, light (in space used and ram engaged) and maintained with love and dediction.
But they have some flaws; flaws widely discussed in their respective threads (here on xda).
My suggestion: if it's the first time for you with the miUI ... Give it a try!
Because it's in fact a custom rom, with many minor (and major) things already at your disposal.

LineageOS is your ROM then.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/development/rom-cyanogenmod-14-1-xiaomi-mi-5-t3501971
We'll get the official gemini release tonight.
The place for the mi5 roms in xda is in the front page of the mi5 subforum; there is a section just for them full of info and goodies and pixies and unicorns and etc etc. :
mi5 subforum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5
RR stands for Resurrection Remix and AOSCP is also know as CypherOS
But just a couple of hours ago LineageOS has started with the nightly: https://download.lineageos.org/gemini
And yes: do a search before asking a redundant question because all the informations are already here at your disposal.

No chance of a custom ROM?

Did I just screw myself by buying a Xiaomi Redmi 10x 5G because it has a Mediatek SOC?
I was able to buy this phone from a Chinese webshop with a 'global ROM'. Turns out it's just a Chinese ROM with Google play store and half working services installed.
When searching for a global, EU or custom ROM I found out there are pretty much no custom ROM's for Mediatek SOC phones because apparently Mediatek (I assume their kernel) isn't open source.
The hardware is great but this Chinese ROM definitely isn't if you want to use Google services instead of Xiaomi.
I've been able to remove pretty much all of the Chinese apps and also most of the Google alternatives from Xiaomi but for instance it can't sync my contacts or my calendar.
Please tell me all hope is not lost.
I have my bootloader unlocked. Can install TWRP if needed (just haven't done it yet since I don't have another ROM to flash).
Any advice in this situation would be appreciated.
Not yet. The fact that it runs mediatek just makes the development of roms slower. I have a note 8 pro, that also runs a mediatek. Just give it more time. Like a lot more time. I am thinking of changing to a custom rom in about 2 years. Xiaomi will provide great updates, use a custom launcher if you want.
I suggest you to keep on stock rom firmware only.
Root it with magisk. Flash it with twrp.
And everything is fine.

Now the moderator has re-opened this thread we can go on discussing the 12 Pro EEA.
I managed to flash the full EEA Stable beta V13.0.17.0 SLBEUXM recovery rom by just using the option to update by choosing the update file I downloaded seperatly.
Android Security-update date is now 2022-05-01.
Looks everything is fine, it is rooted again and I am using Swift Backup (paid) instead of Titanium Backup since the latter one is not updated anymore since 2019 and it seems it won't be updated anymore.
Swift has a different modern layout and you can make the backup simultaniously or seperate to the device and/or cloud.
For now it works very well.
Also I use Callrecorder from Skavalex since the EEA rom does not support call-recording by itself.
Another thing is that there is atm no custom recovery that works with the 12 Pro or even Android 12 in general.
Since yesterday there is a new update for the Global EEA version.
The date of the security patch is still 1st of May so it is not clear what the changes are.
Will try to find out and post it here when available.

just RGPD.
Better than stock rom https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/miui-13-stable-release.64441/
Well the EEA Global version differs due to the EU Privacy laws so no ads when you during the first setup of the device choose not to allow ads and afterwards you can still switch them off..
Further there is much less bloatware and the few apps that are defined as bloatware you can uninstall easily with ADB or with the XiaomiAdbflash tool.
There is no need for a custom rom like the xiaomi.eu rom because when you are unlocked it is quite easy to remove 99% of the apps you don't like but you can still get the monthly updates from Xiaomi themselves so no issues with camera and other kind of stuff compared with a custom rom.
Nowadays there is no real need for a custom rom because you can make the factory rom as clean as you want by yourself and eventually use apps like Blokada.

Try a Eu rom first then post your review.
Tried it on 2 previous Xiaomi phones and I stand with my opinion.
Been in the custom rom development since 2006 so I know what I am talking about.

And the call recorder, the complete themes + aod, the optimizations, a Chinese base etc...
BTW:the Xiaomi eu roms started in 2010.
Chinese MIUI has seemingly improved a lot, and seemed like most of the bloatware was removable when I was trying it. However MIUI and Xiaomi.eu still have that highly suspicious and deeply integrated "Security" app which I would prefer not to have at all. (Have not tried Global or EEA). (Additionally the xiaomi.eu "devs" (maybe not all, but seemingly the majority of them) have serious attitude issues which do not inspire any trust, and a lot of base apps in .EU still want unnecessary permissions and internet connections).
Would love to see Lineage for this phone, even if it means losing the MIUI camera - a choice of ROMs, especially very clean / basic ones, is not a bad thing
Xiaomi is a Chinese brand, EEA, Global, etc. roms are based on Chinese roms and adapted to countries according to the version.
Xiaomi Eu roms are custom roms based on the version of the phone on Chinese or global roms.
For those based on Chinese you will have features or options before xiaomi releases an update.
For example: the video for the calls does not exist on the stock roms except the Chinese ones.
It is a bit of a stretch to call the xiaomi.eu roms "custom" roms, and somewhat of an insult to true custom rom developers who develop the rom in the entirety. .eu roms are mildly modified Chinese MIUI ROMs and over the years there seems to be less and less modifications (at least in the phones I've tried them on). They are certainly useful for phones that are not officially launched globally and full google services is desired, without Chinese specific apps, but where official global or eea roms exist it may be better to go for the official EEA ROM (privacy wise, as another poster indicated) which would have everything necessary without all the telemetry, or alternatively full custom like Arrow / Lineage / Omni / Pixel Experience.
It is quite subjective though and if you prefer Chinese official or .eu ROM's and they do everything you want, then great. If they removed the Security thing & telemetry, or allowed the user to deny permissions while still being able to use certain apps, I would actually rate the Chinese ROM very highly. Right now I am undecided what is best, but hoping for Lineage in the near future.

Call Recorder worked already on rooted stok rom with Skavalex Call Recorder which I use for many years now even way before Xiaomi came into the play arena of phones.
Not having the Chinese base is a big plus and all the optimizations you can do yourself and stock Camera is better than Gcam.

We are talking about Xiaomi eu ROMs that do not need root to have the call recorder.
And it's not Skavalex but Skvalex who It's not free.
"Not having the Chinese base is a big plus and all the optimizations you can do yourself"
Which?
I am talking about official Global EEA and the latter one is point of discussion in this thread and not any other rom.
Optimizations like getting rid of all the apps you do not like, get rid of the few (Xiaomi) apps that eventually will "call home" when you not want it, when not selected at 1st setup that you allow no ads you will get no ads.
When unlocked and rooted I can do with it as much as with any other custom rom but keep the monthly official updates.
So no need for custom rom's and yes it is Skvalex and I have a paid version for it (few bucks) many years ago and he still maintains the app.
