[Q] switching from TMO to Verizon? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm interested in switching my N6 to Verizon from T-Mobile. However I input my IMEI on the VZW website checker and apparently the phone (bought at TMO and allegedly unlocked) is incompatible.
I vaguely recall that to get a non VZW phone onto there network, one ahs to use a previously registered sim from another phone. Anyone know if and how this works?

Is there something that starts with 990?
My verizon nexus 6 order shipment email shows the imei start with 990

Theres a few threads that explain how to do this and more than one way. I did this for my dad. Basically, u need a verizon nano sim activated and jus pop it in.

As someone who has done this... it causes other problems because you have an "unknown device" they basically wont let me me changes to my plan because of it. For example enable advanced calling. After *****ing at them for an hour someone said there is a form we can fill out to register your device on our network so it doesn't show that way.... they said it takes 1-3 business days to process and i did it on Friday. If it actually works i will make a post on it. to inform the masses.

First, thanks to the mod for moving this to the Q&A section! I will remember next time...
I actually decided that, if I can, I would like to move to Straight Talk with my Nexus 6. I ordered a $0.99 CDMA activation off their website (with free delivery, I felt this was a cost I could swallow if it doesn't work out!). The Nexus 6 IMEI doesn't get recognized as compatible on ST either which means, I suppose, that they can only activate Verizon-registered IMEIs.
Not sure how to proceed from here though. I have an iPhone 5S which is ex-Verizon (now T-Mobile) from which I could activate the ST service, after which I can put the SIM into the Nexus 6 to see if it works. There are no other options to the ST service I want, so changing service isn't an issue. Are there any other ways to approach this? Perhaps I should do what JustusIV is doing and register the phone with Verizon first?

Yeah, I think the easiest way for you would be to just activate your sim card in the iphone and then move the sim card to the Nexus.
I have verizon, and all I had to do was cut my microsim from my previous device down to nano size and put it in the Nexus. The only issue is, like they said above, MyVerizon registers it as a "Non-VZW Device" which can cause issues with making account changes. I'm interested to hear the results of the guy above that says he can fill out a form so it doesn't show up that way.

This was a bust.... more miss information from the crap customer service.

Went through the same thing. Unless your imei starts with 99 it won't be recognized from vzw. However, all the features do work as advertised. I had no problem adding advanced calling 1.0 and changing voicemail options on my account. I bought the phone through a relative that was on t-mo in december. Been on vzw since.

Quick Way to Unlock Your ATT Tilt

I just got off the phone with ATT and I got an unlock code over the phone within 2 minutes!!!
Simply call 1-(916)-843-4685 and do what it says and you will talk to a representative. Tell them you are going to England/France/Germany/etc this week and you bought a Tilt and your old phone died and that you have a European SIM with you that you use over there and you need it to work in the Tilt. I just did it and I now have an unlocked phone!
Also, for all of you naysayers, google that phone number and it will show up with the ATT International Support.
Enjoy!

You have a SIM unlocked phone. This doesnt mean you can go dumping any ROM on it you want. But yes its a good idea
yeah, the technique works on ur convincing abilities though
@bratag: I'd say SIM unlocking is a much more desired issue as compared to cid unlocking, but then it might vary from person to person..
Quick... somebody try this with an iPhone!!.... *crickets chirping* anyone? *cricket* eh... *shrug* I love my Kaiser :-D
I posted this elsewhere and its documented by others all over.
SIM unlock is very easy. And legal. And actually done by AT&T.
Step 1: Call AT&T @ 1-(916)-843-4685, tell them you travel alot internationally. Ask them to to add the "International Dial" add on to your account (it costs like $6/month). (Note: the reason the number is not a 800 number is because it asumes you are calling from an int'l location, since its their int'l support line. 800 numbers don't work from an int'l location. You can even call the normal 800 # or even call 611 from your phone, and you can get routed to the int'l support line. I recommend you call from a separate line, so you can actually type in the unlock code when they give it to you to confirm it "takes" before you hang up. If you have another company SIM card, you can even test it with them on the phone)
Step 2: Tell them you also travel for extended periods of time and might need to use a local SIM in your phone. And you need an unlock code to do it. Since you have the international plan, they almost always will oblige. (if they don't, hang up, call back, get another rep, and ask again. They will eventually do it)
Step 3: They ask for your IMEI number. And they give you an unlock code.
Step 4: Say thanks to them
Step 5: Go online to your account manager, and remove the Int'l Plan on your features page to cancel it. You will only be charged a pro-rated amount for the feature.
Step 6: Enjoy your SIM unlocked phone.

Well my phone is CID unlocked too, but thanks to Pof
ehhhh, slow it please:
what is the difference between SIM Unlock and CID Unlock?
Which is more permanent or more secure?
If I buy an unlocked Kaiser off this website, is it SIM unlocked or CID Unlocked?
thanks, MN
actually sometimes you dont even have to add international call...if you have been with ATT for a while (I'm going to assume 1 yr +) they will either give it to you over the phone, or email you it within a week if they dont have the code for your phone on hand (this is what happened with my 3125, which is still has no free SIM unlock) CID unlocking of course, is a completely different issue...
CID unlocking allows you to flash any carrier's ROM. SIM unlocking allows you to insert any carrier's SIM.
I dont have an ATT number. I just went into a store and bought the phone, and later that night called internation support and they gave me an unlock code, no questions asked (except for imei )

That surprises me - I've ALWAYS had to give my account information, so I'm leaning towards calling B.S. on your description of your experience, unless you told them a number of other things also....
FWIW, the 800# for International Services is: (800) 335-4685 though for exactly your point about dialing 800#s outside the US, most of us have the non 800 # in our phones: (916) 843-4685.
I've never had to add the $5.99/mo discounted international roaming, just make sure that the "normal" international roaming is enabled. (Of course they fvcked that up last time and took me 3 calls from Japan on VOIP to get it fixed.)
YMMV of course,

Ha, well actually, of course they charge a huge amount per minute for calls when u are roaming intl'ly. But you can buy a monthly service that brings the cost down per minute. It goes from f'in ridiculous rates to just plain ridiculous per minute rates. But this add-on does make sense if you plan to go overseas for an extended trip. And since its an add-on you can add it / cancel it whenever you need/don't need it. An example of the rates: in some cases its like 2.29 per minute to call without the plan. But with the plan its only 1.99
But at 30 cents per minute, if you make more than 20 min of calls, then you've "saved" money. So, how I stumbled upon getting an unlock code was since I was going to be there for a month, I actually got a local SIM and tried to put it in the phone and they said I could, but they'd have to give me an unlock code, which they did.
You may call BS, but who cares. I did this and it worked. If you want to call BS on this, go ahead. I found this on Howard Forums and thought you guys might like to know. Others have got their unlock code directly from ATT by using this method.

You are the first person I've heard of getting an AT&T unlock code without being an AT&T customer. Bravo for you if true. (Note that I didn't say the *method* was B.S. - in fact I affirmed it working for me as well! I said doing all that when you "dont have an ATT number" sounded like BS - because I've always been asked for my account information as soon as they answer the phone.)

Hi,
I'm new in this phoneworld. I wonder if it is possible to buy a AT&T tilt via ebay and nulock her in Belgium. Do you think it is possible?
Kind regards.
I have called twice now to get my SIM unlock code and both CSRs said that because I have had AT&T service for less than 90 days, they can't/won't do it. They say I have to have at least 3 months service. Will try a couple more times but doesn't look good.

Well, I'm not aware of any verified-working Kaiser unlocking services right now, so I'd say no - not unless the person you buy it from has already had AT&T unlock it.

Well I got a Tilt on Friday and called this morning to get it unlocked. For grins I bought a brand new $20 GoPhone w/activation kit, activated it, and used that phone # at an Agent store to buy the Tilt no-contract ($530 ugh). Then I called the International Services folks and gave them the GoPhone # and my new Tilt IMEI. I expected a big spiel about the length of time I'd been a customer (as T-mo did to me on a prepaid unlock), a refusal to unlock phones on prepaid (as I'd previously heard from Cingular), or some other such nonsense - at which time I planned to call right back on my loooong-term account and get an unlock code.
Note that the first thing the agent asked was "Mobile number and last 4 digits of SSN". I gave him the prepaid phone # (active for <1wk) and my correct last 4 digits of SSN. He seemed to have trouble getting that combination to take, so I mentioned "This is prepaid, so I didn't think there was a SSN on it...."
To my unending shock, the guy on the other end of the phone then said "Ok, I've got an unlock code for you. Ready?" and read me out the code for my phone. Popped in an old Tesco SIM I had kicking around, entered the code, and wham! Unlocked Tilt.
So there's either some serious YMMV going on at International Services or AT&T has thrown in the towel on unlocking!
YMMV of course

Be careful using phone upgrade on another line

What a calamity of errors. Many my fault.
So I try to activate online and it fails. Doesn't say why.
Call them up and they said seems to be a problem with your SIM Card.
Now keep in mind my seal was broken. But I assume it just let loose in shipping.
I had the HTC One before this phone.
So I go to open the SMALL slot on the right assuming the small one was the SIM Card.
Nothing in there. Well no wonder they can't activate it.
Look in Box and the Card is there with SIM card missing.
Damn someone stole it, I'm thinking.
I asked can I go to store and get one, no. You'll have to send phone back (that I just put an $18.00 glass screen saver on).
So then I try my old SIM Card from HTC One. No it won't fit. So they are gonna send me another.
Hang up.
Then I thought I should see what's behind the Big Slot.
Dam there is the SIM Card. Idiot. Just never expected it to be in such a large slot, especially when HTC One wasn't.
Call Back. Still won't activate.
She says the SIM Card is activated on another line.
It was already tied to my wifes line that I used the upgrade on.
So she released it and all was good.
Just a heads up in case someone else activates on another line. I don't think anyone else on the planet would have made the other mistakes Long day.

I used another line's upgrade. I tried to activate on my account page and it failed. I then turned the phone on and it began auto activating so I shut it off immediately (since that person doesn't live in the same house). I did the Sprint Chat and it took the rep a few minutes but she finally got it activated correctly for me.
If you ordered it on her line, then booted it up. It will automatically try and activate on the line it was ordered for. So that was the problem... Should have just contacted them before ever booting it up to get it set to yours first. no biggie.

I never booted it until after I called them. It was a trivial issue in hindsight. I'm just giving others a heads up.

My suggestion speak to someone on chat, they seem to be more knowledgeable.
When i called customer care spent an hour and he was unable to do it.
When I did it in chat an explain what happened 15 minutes later I was up and running.

Bingo! Amazing how people don't realize LTE is a GSM technology and requires a Sim. Even the first LTE phones (EvoLte/GS3) has them. It's just the older lte devices weren't userswappable and were built in.

Sim from another country in sprint N6

Looking for some general imput, i recieved my N6 right before deployment, i have purchased a wifi device that runs off a sim card the company is "ooredoo" (kuwait) my account says i have a phone number and all that jazz. Now sense the n6 has all the radios for the u.s carriers, can i just pop the sim into the n6 and have it work? Even with being purchased from sprint? I dont want to throw it in and cause any issues..(wifi device battery blows, and always seems to die when i try to talk to the wife) also, not rooted at the moment, dont have computer access to download stuff, 5.0.1. Any imput would be great! Thanks fellas.

Yep just pop it in.
Gave my brother my sprint nexus 6 that i had on att to him and he is in mexico and its working fine.
Gonna pop it in now and see how she responds.
What WiFi device do you have? If you are referring to a WiFi hotspot I don't know if you would be able to use voice or not.
If you purchased the n6 from sprint for full retail price, you should be able to pop any sim provisioned for voice and data from kuwait in it and it should work. If you are on contract with sprint, you might have to talk the "sim unlock code" out of them. It shouldn't be too difficult given your circumstances. Sim unlocking doesn't require a computer though, so don't worry about that.
As for causing issues, as long as you don't try to use a camel spider as a sim card, you shouldn't have any issues. Worst that happens is the phone just doesn't detect the sim (in the case of a bad sim card) or either voice or data won't work if not provisioned correctly.
Very useful information. What would require me to have to get the Sim unlock number? Turns out the Sim is too big.. Might break down and cut it after I watch a few YouTube vids. Yes the card is set up for data and voice, but I don't have a plan for voice, just data, which is fine cause I've been using hangouts sense I left the u.s the WiFi device is made by huawei, little oval shaped white mobile hot spot.
Thanks for the imput yall. Works like a charm!

Verizon Re-activation issues after Plan change.

So like everyone else, I bought my Nexus Carrier Free online and just popped in my sim from my M8 and it worked.......up until 30 mins ago when I called in to make a plan change. For some reason, I could not make a plan change online so I had to call in. They recognized that my phone was not a VZW phone and I believe took it off the account to make the plan change.
Now it pops up with a message that says Sign into Verizon wireless, and your Device can not be activated. Not sure what to do at this point.
I have already tried restarting the phone and no luck. I think if I pop my sim in my old M8 it might work but I am stuck at work and cant access it until I am off. Any ideas?

You can't make plan changes with a non-Verizon device tied to your account. They probably moved the sim to make the changes. If you're lucky you can reactivate the sim in your M8 but I'd bet you're going to have to get a new sim. Next time just take the sim out of your Nexus, put it in the M8, make your plan changes, and then switch back. I've done this a few times with an old Moto X.
That's what I figured. Well as long as they don't block my Nexus from network access, I should be alright. I hope at least. I wait till I get home and keep my fingers crossed.
Glad I saw this. I will be making a plan change before swapping to the nexus when it arrives
UPDATE. NEEDED TO ACTIVATE MY OLD PHONE WITH NEW SIM. If you want to make a plan change, pop your sim into your old phone, make the change, then into the Nexus,
I have an major issue, I don't have a Verizon device to use to activate my Sim on my nexus 6. I have service already but my Sim got damaged and the device I used to activate my Sim card the Sim card port is damaged, which is preventing my new Sim activation. I don't know anyone with a Verizon device I can use to activate the new Sim. Guess I'll just cancel my vzw service. I can't win for loosing.

Yeah I already know how to do that. That's not my issue. I don't have a device to activate my new micro Sim card.

That was my issue in the thread referenced - after failing to get beyond the website, people on the phone (including Tech Support) and people in the store, I obtained someone's Moto X in order to activate the nano SIM on my line and then swapped it to the Nexus 6. The other option was to wait until Verizon recognizes the phone (hopefully soon), but I decided to do it early because their SIM activation process is more of a hassle than it needs to be and wanted to thwart Verizons controls, in just this little way .
And yet, some folks - especially towards the current end of that topic - have been saying that they found friendly and helpful Representatives who helped them activate directly with the Nexus 6. I don't know how that was accomplished due to the system checks in place, though.
Finding someone who can lend a phone just to activate the SIM on your line might be a consideration.

Iv asked everyone that I know if they had a Verizon 4g unactivated phone I could use to activate my Sim with and no luck. Just to be sure the phone that I need to borrow needs to be unactivated meaning if its already activated then it won't work right?

Hm, someone else might know better than I would, but I've moved phones temporarily off an active line - replacing them with an older 3G backup phone with completely different SIM - in order to use the newly freed phone to activate my new SIM on another line on behalf of a different phone. Then I just reactivate the 4G phone back on its original line after putting its original SIM back in.
For the Nexus 6, I still have the Moto X on hand from the nano SIM activation and it no longer shows up in my account for the line - instead, I get that "unrecognized" phone message from Verizon with no picture. For all I know, this Moto X is no longer considered active on my line or in this account, so might work for your line activation purposes if you're in the NY metro region, actually. PM if interested.

I live in KY,I really do appreciate the offer I would take u up on it if I lived close by were I could meet up with ya and activate my Sim then hand you back the device. It will probably take me a week or so to activate a Sim because my local Verizon store reps are assholes.

Iv seen that thread already. Thank you though for trying to help I appreciate it very much.
Finally got my nexus activated. I had to go to Walmart and buy a 4g prepaid LG transpyer I then used my imei from my old note 2. I'm now gonna return the LG to Walmart and get my 80$ back.
Same Issue Today
My finance saw Verizon cutting the data plan by $10's so she jumped on it and kicked my phone off the Verizon network in the process. Had to go to the Verizon store and get the guy to grab a return phone, program said SIM and pop it into a phone. Too bad my backup phone doesn't take the small SIMS...

Carrier Locked? Sim Locked? UICC Locked? What state is my phone in?

I bought an SM-N960U used off of letgo about a month ago now and I have been trying to get it to work for me but I am still having a few issues.
The guy I bought it from, who himself bought it used, was using it on T-Mobile and I am able to make and receive calls okay and get internet okay with Verizon. The phone was originally a Sprint phone. It continuously gave me "Activation was Unsuccessful" fullscreen messages repeatedly until I used adb to disable com.sec.omadmspr and com.sprint.ms.smf.services.
When swapping SIMS from different carriers the phone DOES NOT ask for an UNLOCK code.
When I first got the phone I tried to call Sprint and ask if the phone was Carrier locked thinking that if there was a small amount owed or something perhaps I could pay it and UN-Carrier Lock the phone... Well, that didn't go well. Since I wasn't on the account and couldn't provide the name or phone number of the old owner they wouldn't tell me if there was OR wasn't a carrier lock on the phone. Eventually I got them to take the IMEI but they still told me nothing.
So, I've been using the phone daily for about a month now, but because of it's problems (the app that won't run) I still have to carry my old phone as well. This phone is always on Roam. One time when trying to fix it I dialed the *228 PRL update number. That was a mistake. It broke my internet to the point where NO ONE was able to fix it. I went to a Verizon stone. No help. I called customer service. No help. They transferred me to Tech Support.... finally they had me swap in one of my older SIM cards and they programmed that one to work.
TLDR; The phone works with VZW voice and data, but is always on roaming, some apps refuse to work properly, under UICC Unlock the phone says it is locked to Sprint Sims and sometimes the data connection drops and it says it doesn't work because of "Data Roaming" being disabled.
What version of locked is my phone? Is it safe to start flashing it?

you probably has nothing to do with your problem but it may be of some help if you contact the guy mentioned in this thread for the LG V20, it's a guy that works for sprint and you can contact him on the Sprint Users forums ..
He may be able to help you with the sim unlocking of your phone, there's nothing to lose I think!
give it a shot ... look at this thread and then register for an account on the Sprint Forums and look for the guy..

You need to contact the person who sold you the device and ask them for assistance. As they may need to contact Sprint to activate the device and unlock it for you.

Thanks, but the guy I bought it from bought it used, so he wont have any Sprint account info, so then I'd have to try to track down the person he bought it from... and on and on and I dont know how long or fruitful the search would be... and again... I'm on the phone right now, on Verizon with a Verizon SIM. I dont think its carrier locked... but then I dont know what's going on.

They don't want to make it easy for people to re-purpose stolen phones. There are things a legitimate owner can do in order to make a phone ready for re-sale, and it sounds like these things didn't happen for the phone you bought. It all sounds a bit fishy, doesn't it?

Thanks, but if I thought "it sounds a bit fishy" I probably wouldn't have bought the used phone in the first place... and I certainly wouldn't have called Sprint and given them the IMEI and asked them; the people that could render my phone a useless brick, with one tiny bit of information, for help. Each smart phone I've bought in the last few years has been used because frankly to me it seems to be the best way to buy them financially. $1000 the day they come out or $200 - $300 6 - 12 months later used.

Point is, when someone is about to buy a used phone from a stranger, make sure it is factory reset and then immediately call the carrier and confirm the IMEI is clean and that it has been carrier unlocked, else, don't buy it. Obviously it's not advice for you, since you already did it the wrong way. This is a good lesson for posterity.
